The Maine Department of Human Services removed the infant daughter of Mohamed Muse Issak and Shamso Hirsi from their home in 1996, after doctors and case workers found that the girl, Kafia, had broken bones. Last year, a District Court judge terminated the parental rights of Issak and Hirsi, who are mmigrants from Somalia. In December, Maine's supreme court upheld the district court's ruling. The U.S. Supreme Court refusal to hear the case ends the birth parents' legal options. DHS Commissioner Kevin Concannon said the court's decision affirmed his agency's action. Kafia's foster parents white, American-born Christians have asked to adopt her, but the proceedings have been delayed by Issak and Hirsi's legal appeals, Concannon said. Muslims in the Portland area have expressed anger at Kafia's placement with a non-Muslim family. DHS has a policy of trying to place children with foster families of the same faith, but the state said no Muslim foster families were available when Kafia's injuries were discovered. Winston McGill, a Muslim living in the Portland area, said he never felt Kafia should remain with Issak and Hirsi if she was in danger. But state officials do not appreciate the importance of preserving her religious heritage, he said. ''I think if it was a child of the Jewish faith, I think the Jewish community would have said, 'This child should be placed in a Jewish household,''' he said. ''I'm disappointed.'' Doctors discovered that Kafia had a broken leg when she was 2 months old. She was removed from her home and spent two months with a foster family. State workers discovered she had a broken collarbone and five broken ribs a month after she was returned to Issak and Hirsi. Kafia's 18-year-old brother, Bashir Muse, said his family is devastated by Kafia's removal and that her injuries were accidental. ''She is my sister, she is my blood. She's not like property that you give away. This is a human being,'' he said. ''What happens after 20 years when I see her on the street? She won't know me.''

In the West, in recent times it has become the regrettable norm for the state and its agencies to poke their filthy snouts into people's lives. Children's Aid is only the most high profile of such agencies who have become ad hoc "social police" whose brief is to bring to heel those who would dare to deviate from the prevailing, and prescribed, social values and mores, generally to be taken as extreme liberalism and its attendant new age, feminized feminazi sensibilities. In the US you have the freedom and right to choose your president. Very important constitutional right. But once you step into the voting booth and you have to choose between Bush and Gore, would it not dawn on you that the so-called choice is no choice at all. There is not a single iota of difference between the two. Which makes nonsense of your whole freedom to choose. Of course you have the freedom to express your frustration and outrage but who will hear you? If a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound? While these much-trumpeted freedoms and values have become attenuated and increasingly meaningless there has been a proportional erosion of a person's most basic and primordial freedoms, namely the freedom to be let alone in the pursuit of one's own "happiness". No, there are a myriad agencies, busybosy school boards and staff and thughish police agencies who are only too willing to inject themselves into your existence with their regulations and procedures and endless bureaucratic bafflegab. In Somalia I couldn't stand in the street and say what I thought of the big boss or even say his nickname of Afweyne( BIg Mouth). But I could raise my children any which way I liked. I could have made them christian, animist, hindu; Could have taught them about Darwinian evolution and let them adopt that as their religion; Discipline them when they depart from their prescribed limits of acceptable behaviour, limits set by oneself, not a government agency; In all ways run my household the way I see fit without let or hindrance from busybody government agencies. In Canada I can stand in the street and make fun of the idiotic Prime Minister Chretien and even make fun of his twisted mouth(I might call him Afqallooc) with impunity. But I can't slap my child on the wrist even if he burns the house down. I wonder which freedom I would cherish more....

First, You don't have to pick Gore or Bush - indeed I'm not. I'm writing in John McCain. I thought he was best qualified during the primaries and I still think that. True enough you can say I'm "wasting" my vote. But I'll vote for who I think is the right guy for the job - not hope to pick a winner like its a horse race. Secondly I am reminded of the line "Your children are not your children." Parents do not have limitless natural rights to their children. Is it OK for a parent to have sex with their child? Is it OK for a parent to kill their child? How 'bout just beat severely? You see my point. Have we gone too far in protecting children in America? In some respects we have. But in general the limits to freedom should be that my right to throw a punch ends where your nose begins - and this applies to children as well as adults.
