An Iraqi man suspected of shooting and killing two U.N.
employees Wednesday at an agency office in Baghdad, Iraq, said he only planned
to take some hostages to protest international sanctions against his country.
Fu'ad Hussein Haider told reporters after his arrest that he intended to let
members of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization staff go after his
demands were met.
Then, he said, Iraqi government guards started shooting at him.
"I was not intending to fire at anyone, but when
the guards opened fire at me, I started shooting
indiscriminately," the 38-year-old car mechanic
said.
The dead were identified as Yusuf Abdilleh, the deputy head of FAO
from Somalia and Marwewan Mohammed Hassan, a database
operator from Iraq.
Six other people were seriously injured, and a
seventh man, a U.N. worker, suffered a broken
leg trying to jump from a window of the building, according to a statement from
Amir A. Khalil, director of FAO operations in Baghdad.
