I mean, what else could they do??? Anarchy ruled to the South. And you have to give them credit. With no internaitonal recognition Somaliland has done a good job reviving its economy and establishing a stable environment. However, when Somalia does finally rebuild a government, eventually Somaliland should come back to the fold. The ••••• are a clan. They are not a seperate ethnic group. There is no basis to maintain a seperate state. Furthermore, from an economic and political stand point there are only disadvantages in maintaining a seperate state. Somaliland will never gain international recognition. Somaliland will have more fluid trade if it is integrated with the rest of Somalia - providing the new Somali government represents ••••• equally. So that's my view. Right now, I can understand the ••••• hanging back and waiting to see what happens. But when Somalia does establish a legitimate government and the country starts rolling, it should reintegrate itself. That would be the smart thing to do.

| | Friday, September 29, 2000 - 10:40 pm Proud Girl / Naser Somaliland has a coast line (including one of four deep water ports at Berbera). It isn't even close to be one of the longest in Africa. The two of you need to pull out a map a study geography again. You must have been sleeping through that class. Somaliland is never going to gain international recognition. During the war it was a good idea, as was Puntland which came later. But at some point, Somalia will have to reunify. Like it or not, there are no divisions which justify two seperate Somali states.

| | Saturday, September 30, 2000 - 06:19 am Hi proud girl There is nothing shameful with a community expressing their desire to be seperate from the rest especially under the circumstances we are under where their part of the country has gone a lot of suffering and has got a lot to loose should they continue with the uncertain politics of the south. Any Union of people can only be achieved voluntarily if there are benefits in the union rather than pure nationalistic emotions and hysteria. However it will be shameful when the time comes where the south is at peace with itself and the North refuse a reunion knowing the full advantages and benefits of such Union. To mention a few benefits are: 1) A stonger negotiating position within the international community. An example being a recently negotiated agreement between the government of Somaliland and TOTAL France an oil multinational where the terms of agreement were just a sale out for the north somalis. 2) Pooling of resources and gaining the benefits of economies of scale. This may include a joint territorial army to defend the borders. An example being the recent incursion of Ethiopian troops in to Somaliland which would never have happened in such a union. 3) Integrating our cultures and benefiting from each others cultures. 4) Havent you seen more and more countries joining together and asked yourself why they are doing so? Joining together brings about freedom of movement between the people, movement of education, movement of employment, tranfering skills from one area to another, Strengthening social bonds. While on the other hand creation of borders hinder the same from happening. I believe with all the benefits from a union with the rest of the Somalis, Somalilanders would not make a choice of separation if the conditions are right for such a union. However we must be careful when dealing with our political leaders who are normally blinded on selfish self-political interest who purpotedly make decisions on our behalf.

The World Community will never recognize Southern Somalia or a forced renegotiation of the Ethiopian border because of the precedent that sets. Reaaragning borders and creating breakaway states, even when justifiable on moral grounds, leads to serious conflict and war. What happens in Somalia matters in India for example. So, I think eventually the Somalilanders themselves will want what international recognition brings. I would NEVER condone the use of force to bring Somaliland back to Somalia proper. This would only foster further needless bloodshed and violence. Somalia needs peace and prosperity and we're going to have our hands full bringing the Mooryan under control as it is.

It is not a seperate nation nor does it claim to be. If you look at Belorussia and Russia you find the same situation. There is essentially no difference between the Belorussians and the Russians. They are seperate states within the same ethnic group. There is certainly precedent for what Somaliland has done. The point is it is in neither Somalias nor the Isaaqs long term interests to try and maintain a seperate state. | | Tuesday, October 17, 2000 - 05:03 am TO:proud girl: hello sis, iam somalilander,and i am not gonna insult you.iam just gonna tel you why the somaliland people don't want to come back,so i will give you a brief history of what had happen in norhern somalia during the late 1980's.in 1988 the government of somalia took a campign or genocide aginst humanity in their own people and for the firt time in the history of mankind.the somali government war planes took off hargeisa airport and bomb hargeisa itself,it never happen any where else but somalia.the somali government who suppose to protect thier own people,were kiling and masacaring the people they suppose to protect.another example of mas kiling in 1989 there were 47 youg college student and one triple nigth in 1989 the somali government forces masacared in jasira beach,i knew most of those students and the only reason they were mudered because they were izaaq.between 1988 and 1989 we lost over 40,000 innocent people who were a law biding citizens.so my dear sis i will let you be the judge.i think the somaliland people took a firm stand because they don't wan to loose another 40,000 innocent people.so my dear sis remember the nothern people back in the 1960's they were the forefront for the unification of the somali nation,with out any condition they came. i expect a logic answer and i didnot insult anyone and i expect the same thing.

IN MOGDISHO DURING THE EARLY 90'S SOME 80,000 DAROOD CIVILIANS WERE BUTCHERED TO DEATH IN THEIR HOMES BY THE USC AND ANOTHER 400,000 DAROOD CIVILIANS WERE EXPELLED FOR THE SIMPLE REASON OF THEIR TRIBE. IN BAYDHABO SOME 500,000 RAXANWEIN CIVILIANS LOST THEIR LIVES DUE TO THE CIVIL WAR. ALL IM TRYING TO SAY IS EVERYONE HAS SUFFERED AND LOST LOVED ONES BUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ISSAQ AND EVERYONE ELSE IS WHILE THE OTHER SOMALI'S ARE WILLING TO RECONCILE THE ISSAQ ARE STUCK IN THE PAST AND ARE HOLDING ON TO OLD GRUDGES.
