REPUBLIC OF THE HOLLY SOMALILAND

Shame on BBC Somali Service!

The BBC Somali Service has alas proved its partisanship. While they drum up a gathering of fewer than a hundred people who are pro-Abdulqasim Salat Hassan’s faction (the so-called one man Somalia government manufactured in the neighboring Djibouti), they miserably failed to live up to any journalistic standards by failing to cover the demonstration by the Somaliland Community in Holland. Similar large demonstrations have been held by the Somaliland communities in major cities in Europe such London and Copenhagen. However, the BBC Somali Section gave deaf ears to the community members who contacted them so that they can cover these events. Shame!

A large demonstration was held by the Somaliland community in Hague, Holland on October 5, 2000 in support of the Somaliland independence. The Hague police estimated the crowed at 1,600. The demonstrators were waving green tree branches and the Somaliland Flag. Some young demonstrators had their faces painted with the colors of the Somaliland flag. The demonstrators also carried placards with various slogans conveying messages that demanded recognition for Somaliland, and pictures that showed the mass graves that were discovered in Hargeisa, Somaliland. This large crowd marched through the streets of Hague while singing in Dutch and Somali, and chanting slogans and poems. The march culminated at the doorsteps of the Parliament house where representatives of ASIN addressed the crowd and handed a petition to the members of the Foreign Relations Committee (of the Dutch Parliament) who greeted the crowd at the gate. For further details read the report below (in Somali) and the petition (in English) that was handed to the authorities.

Banaan bax balaadhan oo shalay ka dhacay magaalada Heeg ee wadanaka Holland

Qore: Abdirahman Jama, Somaliland Forum, Holland Oktoober 6, 2000

Sida caadada u ah hawada Holland xiliga jilaalka, waxay ahayd mid aad u qabow oo lafta kaa galaysa, waxaana da'aayey roob shuux ah. Inkastoo ay ahayd goor barqo ah haddana ceeryaamada iyo daruuraha ku dadan dhulka ayaa qorraxda qarinayay oo baabuurta iyo jidadkaba wali laydhadhka ayaa ka shidnaa. Waa maalmaha qofka naftiisa u rooni aanu gurigaba ka bixin. Haddana kumannaan qof oo reer Somaliland ah kuna dhaqan Holland ayaa aroortii hore guryahooga uga soo kalahay inay ka qaybgalaan bannaanbaxan. Dadkan oo badankoogu ugasoo yimid shaqoyinkoodii ama iskuladooddii inay muujiyaan shucuurtooda wadaniyadeed, waxa hormood u ahaa ururka ASIN (Association of Somalilanders in Netherlands) oo maalmahanba ku hawlanaa qabanqaabada hawshan.

Guddigaa Baarlamanku iyagga oo aad ula yaaban xamasada dadka ka muuqata ayay isku dayayeen inay dhagaystaan warbixintii laga siinayay xaalada Somaliland.

Dadka qaarkood waxay ku dhawaqayeen waajibkayagii waddaniga ahaa waanu gudannay mar haddii aanu fariintii gaadhsinay dawladda Holland iyo maxkamadda aduunka ee dawladda Somalilandna dhinaceega ha ka soo baxdo oo waftiyo heer sare ah ha u soo dirto waddamada Yurub.

Muddadii aanu ku sii soconay basaska ayaa waxaan la sheekaystay qaar ka mida dhalinyaraddii aadka u yaryarayd ee ka qaybgashay bannaanbaxa. "Waxaan bannaanbaxa u tagay waxaan doonayay inaan aduunyada tuso inay Somaliland ay tahay waddan jira oo u baahan in la aqoonsado" ayuu igu yidhi Cabdicasiis Cawl oo ah wiil yar oo 19 jir ah mudo toban sannadooda Holland deggan. Marse aan wax ka waydiyay dhalintan yaryar inay wax ka garanayaan dagaalkii 1988 waxay ii sheegeen inay aad u yar yarayeen ayna waalidkood ka maqlaan sheekoyinka ku saabsan dawladdii Siyad Bare iyo dagaalkii SNM ta. Ayaan oo iyadu shaqo wayn ka geysatay qabanqaabada ayaa ii sheegtay "markaan maqlay Gaani iyo Moorgan ayaa dawlad Jabuuti ku dhistay ayuu dhiiggu i dhaqaaqay."

Aragtida Jaaliyada ASIN ay maanta u gudbisay dawlada Holland waxaan ku soo kobi karaa:

v In inbadan oo dadka shirka Jabuuti lagu caleemo saarey ay yihiin kuwa ka qayb qaatey xasuuqii iyo dilkii dadka loona baahanyahay in maxkamad la soo taago.

v In laga shiidaal qaato aragtida danjiraha dawladda Nederland u fadhiya Golaha Amniga ee Jimciyadda Quruumaha ka dhaxeysa (Mudane P. van Walsum) oo hadalkuu golaha ka yidhi ka mid ahaayeen inaan marnaba la isku dayin in dad laga muquuniyo siday jecelyihiin iyo aayahooda, taasoo uu markaa danjiruhu ula jeeday SomaliLand.

v In dadka reer Somaliland ay istaahilaan taageero iyo aqoonsi ah Jamhuuriyadda Somaliland oo dib u dhalashadeedu ay ahayd 18kii Mey 1991.

v In laga fiirsado aragtida sida qasku ku jiro uu u sheegay “madax weynaha” la caleemo saarey oo ah inuu sheegtay inuu madaxweyne u yahay Somaliland, maamulkiisana ay hoos imanayaan, taasoo keeni karta waxay Somaliland hadda ka kortey oo ah rabshad iyo qas abuur.

v Ugu danbaynna Jaaliyadda Somaliland ee Holland waxay ka codsanaysaa madaxda iyo bulshada Caalamka inay aqoonsadaan waddanka Somaliland.

Petition to The Netherlands October 4, 2000
The Association of Somalilanders In Netherlands (ASIN)

Jaaliyada Somaliland ee Holland

SOMALILAND IS BETER OFF AS AN INDEPENDENT STATE

Somaliland community in the Netherlands is concerned about their family members and friends in Somaliland. The Association of Somalilanders in Netherlands (ASIN) represents this community and works closely with other Somaliland organisations in Europe.

The so-called peace conference in Djibouti under the leadership of the Djibouti president, Ismail Omer Guelleh, is a danger to the stability in the region. This instability of peace could have an impact for Somaliland citizens, which have been the oasis of peace in the region since 1991. The Somaliland Community is asking the Dutch government to recognise Somaliland as an independent sovereign state immediately.

Somaliland got its independence on the 26 of June 1960 after being a protectorate of the Great Britain for 86 years. The Italian government gave Somalia that borders Somaliland on the south, its independence on the first of July the same year. The newly born nations formed the Somali Republic on the same day. The leaders of both states did not officially sign the Act of the Union. ASIN regards the unification of the two states in 1960 an unlawful merger.

After thirty years of suppression, torture, ethnic cleansing, over 100,000 dead and millions of refugees caused by the southern Somalia rulers, Somaliland regained its sovereignty on May 18, 1991 for the second time. This re-birth of Somaliland was a result of a long process of meetings and debates among citizens of the country, which took months to soothe and heel the wounds among the different clans. This process of reconciliation began from the grass roots social groups of this re-emerging Somaliland and was solely financed by the people with little or no help from outside.

The UN office in Nairobi financed the Djibouti conference which began in May 2000. The European Union, Arab states and Organisation of African Union gave their moral support to the conference, which was in fact a reunion of the deposed members of the Barre regime. Somaliland gave its blessings but did not attend this conference.

The results of the conference were the creation of parliament and a president in-exile. Various parliament members had important posts during the fascistic dictatorial regime. There are more than 16 ex-generals, the likes of Morgan and Gani the notorious duo, who engineered the destruction of Somaliland prior to the bombings of 1988, and killings and butchering there after. These men have no place in a parliament but only in a courtroom to be tried for their crimes against humanity.

The new “president” Abdikasim Salad Hassan held various ministerial positions including his last post as the Minister of Interior in the dictatorial regime of Siad Barre. Mr. Hassan was a cabinet minister for life and is therefore also responsible for the murder of innocent Somaliland citizens.

The Somaliland community in the Netherlands would like to bring the following to your attention:

The elite group which were part and parcel of the old dictatorial regime of Barre are again positioning themselves for power through the so-called peace conference in Djibouti.

Some of those nominated for the leadership during this conference are war criminals; human rights abusers and have committed crimes against humanity. These thugs have to be persecuted.

If the Dutch authority recognises the new Somali administration it will legitimise crimes committed against humanity and war criminals. In the case of Milosovic and kradsic the western countries seem to have adopted the righteous path.

Referring to the Somaliland people, the Netherlands ambassador to UN, Mr. P. van Walsum, said in his speech to the Security Council "if the people don't want to be part of a process they don't feel safe and secure, they cannot be forced to be part of it. No population can be forced to be part of a process they don't believe in.”

The people of Somaliland deserve all the support for the recognition of their republic, which was re-born on 18 May 1991.

The so-called president of Somalia in exile is already on the war path by declaring that if necessary (needed) Somaliland will be rejoined with Somalia by force. This will be a tragic destabilisation of Somaliland.

The Somaliland community in Netherlands is therefore hereby request the following from the Netherlands authorities:

Not to allow or take any actions that will have destabilising effect on the prevailing peace that exists in Somaliland.

To recognise Somaliland as sovereign independent state in accordance with the Montevideo Charter of 1933, and the OAU charter of Arusha conference in 1963 recognising the old colonial borders as sacred territorial demarcations for all African states.

To use her [The Netherlands] influence in the European Union not to recognise the new Somali administration and bring the war criminals to justice.

Executive committee,

Association Somalilanders in the Netherlands

Sheep From Berbera Free of Rift Valley Fever

Somaliland newspaper `Mandeeq' on 2nd October Rift Valley Fever has been detected in the long-tailed indigenous sheep of Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

This was revealed by Saudi Arabia's government-owned `Al-Iqtisad' paper published in Riyadh, dated 24th September, issue number 3547. Saudi Arabia's Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, Dr Abdallah Bin-Abd-al-Aziz Bin Mu'ammar, told the paper that the disease was not found in the Persian Black Head sheep of Somalia.

Meanwhile, an official letter received by the Somaliland government from Yemen said herds of livestock shipped from Berbera [northeastern Somalia, northern Somaliland] and eastern Africa which were quarantined have been found free of Rift Valley Fever.
