Friday, October 13, 2000 - 01:56 am Immediate - Press Release September 16, 2000 Somaliland Democracy Center Arlington, VA 22206 sdemcenter@hotmail.com Abdiqasim Promised To break Somaliland With His Choice Of Prime Minister The president, for Somalia’s government in exile finished his consultations with clan-based parliamentary groups in Djibouti on Wednesday and has requested that all groups adhere to a Saturday deadline for recommendations and advice for prime minister candidates. It is expected that Abdiqasim Salat will announce his choice of prime minister sometime next week, after concluding consultations that are scheduled to end Saturday, September 30. Sources told Somaliland Democracy Center (SDC) that Ali Khalif was promised to be the next prime minister and that promise helped Abdiqasim Salat to win the election to be the president. However, Abdiqasim was pressured to drop Ali Khalif and he appears to have accepted this advice, because Ali Khalif is no longer considered a front-runner, though he is still in the short list of candidates. Sources told SDC that Abdiqasim Salat told the Darod delegations, who were supporting Ali Khalif, on more than once occasions in the last few days, that in order to secure the unity of Somalia and to break Somaliland’s resolve, I must give a serious consideration to appoint a prime minister who belongs to Isaaq clan. The leading candidates from Isaaq are Osman Kaluun and Ismail Buubaa. Abdiqasim believes that aside from the fact that an Isaaq candidates for prime minister will pose a new challenge to Egal and Somaliland, he can also use the unity argument to silence challengers, who otherwise might withdraw their support from his government, but would not want to aide Somaliland and its succession aspirations. Abdiqasim continues to ignore world leaders' counsel of dealing with the Somaliland issue with "great sensitivity and a sense of enormous responsibility"Ethiopian Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin at General Assembly). Instead he pursues the same perpetual, irresponsible behaviour by making such statements as that he "will break Somaliland's resolve with his choice of prime minister". This statement followed another one he made while defending the president of Djibouti, Ismail Omer Geulleh. In that statement he claimed "the Isaaq deserve 22 seats in the TNA and it is a mistake to compare them to Hawiye or Darod's 44 seats each". A choice of an Isaaq prime minister for Abdiqasim Salat's government in exile ironically, will be a blessing in disguise for Somalilanders. It will further cement the unity within the young Republic and harden the population's resolve to continue on their separate path.
