AnonX | Thursday, November 16, 2000 - 06:44 pm This word is not acceptable in Somali community and everyone who uses publiclyit is stigmatized as ignorant. It is the women who hate dearly to hear this word. At least that was my understanding before I was confronted by a feminist Somali lady who said "I am a proud naag and nothing is wrong with the word". Her argument is that the word is fine but Somalia is male dominated and women are belittled to a point where their pronoun became an insult. This Somali lady said any lady who refuses to accept being naag has accepted inferiority to man and she has a point. I would love to see where other people stand on the meaning of naag, its proper usage and why it is not acceptable in our community. nin, naag, rag, dumar wiil gabar inan(ka), inan(ta) igaar(ka), igaarta(ta) No name calling plz. |

The Equalizer | Sunday, November 19, 2000 - 08:12 am I think most of you are begging the question. My understanding of why women hate to be called "Naag" has little to do with being looked down upon. On the contrary, it has more to do with the stigma associated with it. Culturally speaking, "Naag" is someone who has lost her virginity. That's why often times when you call a virgin girl "Naag," she's offended and retorts with a rhetoric question which is "Adiga maa i naageysatey? 'or' Did I sleep with you???." In other words, she's protesting the fact that you've called her "Naag." This may not be true any longer since most girls don't stay virgin till their wedding night. Nonetheless, it shows how much importance was attached to virginity, at laest in the Somali culture. Women used to be so furious of being called "Naag" that she would put you on the spotlight by daring you to either corroborate your allegation or recant it altogether. This shows how much acculturation and aberration we underwent since we left our beloved motherland of Somalia. P.S., I ain't female. As such, my definition of "Naag" could be challenged by the opposite sex. |

Shumay | Sunday, November 19, 2000 - 02:45 pm When u call girl Naag is bad. Coz Naag is like when u have sex with the girl or if she is u'r wife u can call her Naag. For me even my husband can't call me Naag. Because it's not nice word, no respect at all. |

Xaali | Tuesday, November 28, 2000 - 05:16 am I have no problem with be called Naag. What I can't stand is when some-one address me as: saxiibow; or someone who is trying to pay me the ultimate compliment and they say 'tan waa nin raag ah!!! grrrrrr " |
Caraweelo | Tuesday, November 28, 2000 - 08:21 am hmmm! Good point Equalizer. But I agree with Xaali- I wasn't brought up to think negatively of my gender. So to me there is nothing bad about anything "woman". Nothing wrong with being called Naag and haween etc etc. But here is what I hate: "dhoocil" iyo "naaya"- How demeaning! Somewhat similar to when men are called "boys"- Any explanation where the word "dhoocil" orginated? |
