pleyh... i know why they dont say their somalis, it is simply because:
THEY ARE NOT SOMALIS! They are BARWANIS, so let them say what they are. anyway, everyone should be proud of their culture or ethnicity, so let the bravanese be proud. dont also forget how we persecuted them in Xamaar because they dont have a qabiil to protect their business and homes

To Kalid and anyone out there:

Barawe is in Somalia and Barawanis are Somalians, weather they like or not. But, back in the histoty; Barawe, Kismayo, Mombaza (Kenya), and Zansibar(Tanzania) which all lies in the cost land of Indian Ocean, where under the rule of Said Barqash (of Arab origin). he was the king of the cost and also he is the one who introdused and impeplemented the SAWAHILI language which is half Arabic and half of the local Bantu dailet. The Sawahili language is not a Kenyan or Tansanian language. Most of Kenyanis ie. Kikuyu who live in the inland don't speak Sawahili.
Therefore, the Barawani language is not diffrent from Sawahili, and the ppl of those cities above are not diffrent and the cities thm selfs.

The headquarter of Barqash was in zansibar, and his main bissniss in the region wa the "slavery".
Even though most of his slaves were exported to the Arebia, zensibar was the only port used to export the slaves from central Africa to America.

After Barqash the Bortiqis came to the region, and I think the origin of these ppl in Q is a Half-cast from Bortaqis and Bantu and have some blood of the Arabs left behind in the region.

That is from me now.

I feel bad, for what Hawiye did to Barvanees. I like Barvanees, they are nice people, they are no peacefull and religion loving and they really dont deserve to be treated like that. They were never in siyaad bare's goverment or never had to do any thing with politics.
I dont think barvanees are somalis, they are barvanees that is all. may be they are in somalia but i dont think they have to any thing with being somali.Because somalis are mean, mad, and ugly, and i dont think barvanees are any thing like that (lol), just kidding.

To nadiaSomalia, I am not a Brawani but it is clear that you dont know much about your origins.

Can I suggest you visit a Brawa website I stumbled upon recently :
http://www.coding-zone.co.uk/bravanese/index2.shtml

Here is an extract from it:

" The Bravanese people as their name suggests are found only in the town of Brava, which
until the 70's was entirely inhabited by them. It is quite known that the Bravanese people
are mostly of Arabic origin. This has been proved by historical documents and sources.
In addition to that their traditions and behaviours are the strongest facts of being affiliated
to Arabs.

The Bravanese people do not have a King, the people are mostly governed by its elders ,
they being honoured and respectable persons. This idea of being governed by elders and
Sheikhs (Islamic leaders) has been the main system of leadership in Brava. This is
mainly due to the fact that most bravanese follow the Islamic laws and Sharia.

Bravaneese dialect which is known as "Chimini", is a derivative from Swahili, as well as
its accent. It was reported in some history papers that Swahili was spoken since the
second century, when the Bantu Arabs used it as their mother tongue, affecting it's
grammar and phrasal elements from the Arabic language(refer to Arabic dictionaries).

Although the Bravaneese have their own language, quite a few of them speak the somali
language too. The Somali language is mostly used outside of Brava where no one
speaks the bravaneese language.

There is a fraction of the Bravanese people who do not speak the Somali language at all
but only speak "Chimini". This is mainly to the fact that some did not either, not have the
opportunity or ability to seek for education or employment outside of Brava

During the 15th century the Bravanese population was reduced substantially by the
Portuguese, with great slaughter of the inhabitants of Brava, of whom many were made
captives, and great riches in gold, silver, and other merchandise were taken , and those
who escaped fled into the country, and after the place was destroyed, they returned to
people it."

This clearly suggests that you are not descended from the Portugese.

Logically this makes sense as the Portugese did not settle in Somalia only faught against us.

I personally think that the Barawanese are as Somali as every other tribe and should be treated with the respect that all other Somali tribes demand for themselves.

Historically I think that the Bravanese are a rich mixture of Somalis who have mixed with the
arab Shirazi's of Persia (Iran).

Their history is important to Somalia as it gives an excellent evidence of type of long distance migrations that occurred in Somalia, over a long period of time.

The travelling was not as historians suggest one way. The Somalis had the intelligence & Sea knowledge to travel long distances.

Some anthropoligists like the famous I.M Lewis try to tell us that the Somalis have never migrated or travelled any further than Ethiopia and Somalia.

I hope you find this of some help.

Yours

ps All Somali history is interesting , whether it is North, South, West or East Somalia.

nadiasomalia,
you sound very young, naieve or very illogical.

Whichever the case may be why dont you be mature about your argument and find out scientically yourself instead of reliying on( with no disrespect heresay).

Believe me the Portugese spent more time in Ethiopia with the so called christian king PRESTER JOHN than they did in Somalia.

Please dont be ignorant about your history and visit the website created by your own people the BRAVEANESE.

As I said earlier I am not Bravanese but am interested in all Somali history.
