Salaams people,

3 Somali boys say holla from Western Washington University (WWU). Pre-Med, Biochemistry, Civil engineering and business are the majors.

No probs in college. Keep good relations with all our East African peoples.

TO AYAANICK:

Yes, good question, where are the Somalis? Driving cabs? Maybe. Or being thugs and following in the footsteps of loosers and thugs.

Advice to my Somali brothers and sisters who are in high school right now and likely to graduate within the next few years: Boys - keep your head up and eyes open. And my Somali sisters keep your legs closed, head up and eyes open, and continue your education cause we are the FUTURE OF SOMALIA!

Peace & Love
Allah be with you

WWU Somali Brothers

Until next time...

I REALLY GIVE PROPS TO EVERYONE WHO PUT THEIR COMMENTS ON HERE. WHAT WE REALLY NEED IS ENCOURAGEMENT NOT DISMORALIZATION, SO LET US PULL FOR EACH OTHER AND COMMEND FOR THOSE OF US,WHO MADE THIS FAR. I, FOR ONE, WOULD LIKE TO SAY TO EVERYONE TO KEEP WORKING HARD AND DO YOUR ABSOLUTE BEST. NOW, THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM, BUT I'M ABSOLUTELY AGAINST NAME CALLING AND PUTTING DOWN OTHERS. MY ADVICE IS....THIS IS THE BEST CHANCE WE'VE EVER AS SOMALIS TO GET THE HIGHEST EDUCATION OUT THERE, SO LET US TAKE IT AND MAKE USE OF IT.

AMAAL, YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT COMPUTER SCIENCE, WELL IT'S FUN, CHALLENGING AND ACTUALLY COOL. I'M ENJOYING IT RIGHT NOW AND I WILL MAKE CAREER OUT OF IT. SO, KEEP WORKING HARD AND FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS.

WE FACE ALL KINDS OF DIFFICULTIES DURING SCHOOL, ONE OF WHICH IS THERE AREN'T MANY PEOPLE THAT CAME FROM SOMALIA, BUT WE CAN'T HAVE THAT STOP US BECAUSE WHO ARE GONA MAKE OUR YOUNGESTERS EASIER IF WE DON'T CLEAR THE PATH FOR THEM. MONEY ISSUES: THERE ARE FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE, SCHOLARSHIP AND LOANS...UNLESS YOU ARE ONE OF THE WELL OFF PEOPLE(WHICH I'M DIFFINETELY NOT).

NOW, I THINK WE SHOULD START TO HELP OTHERS THAT ARE FACING PROBLEMS AND WHEN THEY POST A MESSAGE, ANSWER THEM IF WE CAN.
UNTILL NEXT TIME, PEACE.

This is interesting, but why not post in School-Net section.
But it is a good topic to start with, In my University there is twenty of us. (Somalis)
I'm majoring Bachelor of Business Economics program. it is unique in here in Canada

If you are interested in combining the studies of economics and business, this degree is the one.

I'm specializing in Financial economics which not that many of us are interested, not to mentioned majority in my Univ. are majoring in Computer Science.

I think we need some one in the financial area...

To attending University Students stop the daily coffee..... Good luck with exams.....

hi
let me introduce you myself.
thanks for ya bring a such a
first I'm in hight school student which is my last year in this year. I'm willing to finish hight school, after that I plan to go cholloge and the majore I'm study is engeneering elecronic and computer engeneering too, don't think is hard majore to study, I beleive when something is gonna be hard to is when you not giving enought time to study. the place I'm here is that much somalian, but we do have somalian student, after they finish hight school they start work right way

in My point is I don't think somalian teenger wanna be educatet because most of somalian people don't have any educate beside us, I hope this teenger will cautions for everything and they also consider too. I'm not jugment as a general, we have good student and bad too.

with best wishes

I am going to say some thing new here.
I acknowledge that there is not enough somalis in higher education and it is thus difficult to establish a somali society at uni.
Maximum ppl needed to establish a society is 19ppl at my uni.
I just want to say that those of you who are at uni, should visit somali students at schools and try and encourage them to come to your uni or go a uni.
Once again, it is difficult to organise this when there is no somali society.
peace

Hey every1, It's me again! Well I went to visit Umass Amherst this weekend and there are about 13 of them there and they were planing to open an organization to start bringing Somali students to their school. I witnessed them talk and talk and talk, after break their program will begin. The trips they talked about was so amazing because they were thinking about bringing high school seniors to their school and showing them what is college life is like and how fun and how they can get their education at the same time. I was astonmished at the same time, even though I don't attend their school, they asked my point of view because I might transfer there after next semester. I love to see students that are Somalis that plan and move to an action and even if it falls apart they had a back up. Somalis in Boston need all the help in when it comes to going to college. They were even talking about tutoring them when they have spare time like in January and they also were talking about helping them with their financial aids and their college essays. I think it will work and we need all the Somalis in America or anywhere in the World do the same because we need futures back to our home land...Anyways I am so proud of my friends who are planing to do this and just felt like sharing their plans as well as encourage you guys who are in colleges, Universities to do the same atleast 1 hour helps. Good luck with Finals and have a nice ramadaan!
And thanks for you message WiilSomaliyeed for starting this post and thanks for writing me back and for your encouragements!
WE NEED MORE SOMALIS TO DO THE SAME AS HE DID!!!AND EVERY1 QHO POSTED A MESSAGE!!!YOU GUYS/GIRLS ARE GREAT!!!AND THOSE WHO HAVE NO OTHER SOMALIS IN YOUR SCHOOL LIKE ME KEEP YOUR HEADS UP!! AND REMEBER 1 PERSON CAN CHANGE THINGS IN AMERICA OR ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD!!!!
MUCH LOVE

I agree with Anonymous. I don't think there is enough Somali people in collages and universities that there should be.If you think about how many high school Somali students graduate each year, you' ll be amazed how many of them are considering higher educations.I am senior in high school .I am planning to attend GMI university in Michigan. I don't see a lot Somalis doing things they supost to do in their final year in high school and I think is we don't get enough encouragement from those who made The higher education.

Hello every 1?
I just want to drop line of advice to all the STUDENTS that are currently in the Higher Education. My advice is every country in the western world is experiencing and unparallel economic grow, so considering where we are from. The only way in my opinion that we can take advantage of this is simply getting the right education.

And I just graduated from Carleton University in Canada, and its not a work in the park. So, I really know what U are all going through now. Student loans, Expansive books and all the other things that goes along the COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES. But PLLS remember if any body can do it, so can you. By just staying focused and using your time wisely, Higher Education is simply investing for the future. So PLLS, don’t drop out, I know its taught and might Allah help you on your QUEST.

THIS IS GREAT...ISN'T IT? WE CAN EXCHANGE IDEAS OR JUST CHIT CHAT, IF NEEDED. AS THE HOST OF THE FORUM I WOULD LIKE TO SUGGEST A TOPIC FOR EVERY WEEK SO THAT WE CAN PICK EACH OTHER'S BRAINS FOR USEFUL KNOWLEDGE. NOW, I THINK WE SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM ANY CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS SUCH AS; POLITICS, TRIBALISM, RELIGION(UNLESS AGREED OTHERWISE), SEXISM, RACISM AND REGIONALISM. IF THAT'S AGREED AMONGST OURSELVES, THEN WE WILL HAVE A VERY PRODUCTIVE DISCUSSION.
LET ME START BY THANKING YOU ALL FOR TAKING TIME TO POST YOUR INPUT HERE.

THIS WEEK'S TOPIC:
"WHAT'S THE MOST DIFFICULT PART FOR GETTING READY FOR THE FINALS?"

FOR ME, BALANCING MY TIME TO STUDY AND WORKING. THAT'S REALLY DIFFICULT FOR ME, BECAUSE I HAVE TO MAKE A LIVING AT THE SAME TIME GO TO SCHOOL. TAKING COMPUTER SCIENCE CLASSES DON'T HELP EITHER.....LABS, PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS ARE DUE ALL THE TIME...MAN. WELL, THAT'S LIFE AND WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT. SO, THAT'S MY DILEMA FOR THE FINALS.
WHAT IS YOURS?

UNTILL NEXT TIME, PEACE.

hi everyone my name is Samira and I am majoring human resource management degree in Westminster uni in (LONDON), and just like the others I find it hard to believe that only minority of us do actually reach uni, I think that we all should at least try to get there if we cant then maybe we r not made for that position.i personally think that most of our ppl are hopeless and their number one priority is to make money, which is wrong, to make money in respectable way, is to graduate first then go job hunting with your high qualifications. that is my own ambition and hopefully one day we will all think like I do.

in the meantime do pls try to study hard so one day you could all reach where you want to be in life.

ps. I hope that no-one took what I said offensive cuz I am only concerned about my ppl and I want them all to get somewhere in live!

luv ya

Hi everyone
As a young Somali lady living in London, and had lived in London for the past 13 yrs of my life. I kind of disagree with what you are all stating in some way or the other, reason being I sense that you are all expressing that Somali people should become high and well earning people and all have babbled about how we need business people and ect. But yet again have not mentioned that how our country would need rubbish collectors and minicabs and so on. Just because you have an office or get paid £50,000 thousand a year dose not make you a better person. And not every one is the university type you can be gifted in any other way for example (Richard Branson). I just wanted to sate that I’m hoping to go to university this coming September (inshall) and to make computer science my major and sociology as my minor.

Ps: please don't underestimate others just because they don't have a degree or what ever. So as long as they are earring there keep then let them live their life peaceful.

Pss: Some are working really hard to survive with out others criticizing them.

peace and love
my brothers and sisters

Interesting topic, after seen' London-Lady here I come, Londonlady you right when you said our country needs cabbies and not to mention hair stylist (I just add that up). This is how I feel about Universities.

In University or College, the choice is in our hand. I'm 2nd year University-student here in Toronto......University is not for every-one..

Too many hangovers, (don't get me wrong I don't drink) too much work, too many bad marks, too much frustration, too little enjoyment. That was University for me.

I was in desperate need of a break from the vicious cycle of sleeping in, watching too much TV
not getting enough to eat, wasting time and going back to sleep again. Instead of discovering and honing my creative energies, developing intellectually and being productive in my nationhood. I was arrogant, ignorant and dissatisfied..

To: London-Lady

Richard Branson and Bill Gates were talented enough to pull it off with style. Non of them finished University, I think Richard has not earned his High School degree yet, but look where they are now. Luck must be their side.
I had no such luck. Now don't get me wrong, there are some great memories that collides with the bad ones here in my University.... but the bad memories far exceed the good ones..I wish you and the others good with school.... best wishes with your exams.

This First time Actully been in some kind Of forums First of all I am in OTTAWA U majoring Software ENG.there are lot of Somalis in my school but The problem is lack of Comunication,I should take the blame myself don't hang aroun somalis at all Don't get me wrong I loved to.In the Other Hand The other school in Ottawa area Carleton university they have Strong Comunity they are over 300 hundreds of somalis there and more every year. Here in Canada the problem is not being in school is not helping and comunicating others who need help Specialy Third year and forth year studens help the fresh mans.My opinion is that if we help each other instead of giving looks or stare we will go somehere.Second why All somalis always start first year of U then drop out. it gets lot easier after transition year Flexible schedule plus things you have done before besides is good to have challenge. I am third year now beleive me I am Not having fun but hey I like the chalenge it keeps me busy .Strugle now it will be worth it later.Wiil Somaliyeed I got to give you a credit you open whole lot of comunication this my frist time here trust me it won't be last time.

hmmmmm First of all good topic I kind agree with the London-lady, not every one is college material but those who have the opportunities I personally encouraged them to TRy harder and get the best grades.I am my self have a family (wife&kids)trying to hold 2 jobs and school at same time(computer eng),it is not easy but we have to deal with it.....overall my ppl keep ya head up,and try harder than anyone else that is around you,I am sensing a lot of ppl are going for computers it is a good career..and believe me I have a feeling that the next few years we are going to take over.one more thing I will be selfish if I finish without mentioning our ppl back home lets just pray for them and us we will be reunited one day and be 2gether...and live all in peace.....

Assalam aleikum everyone.
I would like to thank Wiilsomaliyeed personally for being mature enuogh to start this topic.
I go to Humber College in Toronto, hoping to go to the Schulich school of business at York University, I would like to bring up two things:
. Why dont more of our Somali high-schoolers benefit from the countless scholarships, bursaries and student loans offerd by the Government of Canada? The OSAP for example is a loan that you pay back as soon as you graduate in small bits with only 2.5% interest. Tell me of a bank that offers that? University and College tuition is very costly, and we are not millionaires; so we should all try to earn more scholarships. what do you think?

. My second point is that here at Humber, there are all kinds of culural groups. the Latino culture group, the Indian,Carribean, The Jewish, The Korean, Filpino, even for Redheads! I know a lot of Somalis here, why dont we set up our own ultural group, and show others the way of life and culural ideas of Somalis? we could play Somali music, show some of our traditional artwork, etc?

Hello everyone

I graduated from GW university George Washington in Washington DC. I had a couple of problems

1) I had to work full time while going to school and I know a lot of us do that but it is very hard.
2) People in my family and Somalis ( my people) did not understand why I was not getting married when all my friends, sisters etc. where getting married.
But I Thank ALLAH!! its over for me.

For most part, I don't drink and I enjoy of being a loser, or what ever you think of moi..
True Alyssa Milano (In Who is the boss!) won't be knocking down my door for a date anytime-soon!!!
I think I'm the only guy who can actually hurt him self by not finishing University. True University is a tremendous opportunity, one that many Somali-students do not take for granted. I took it for granted, and I'm taking all the power in me to the opportunity we all can achieve.

to anonymous, pls next time state your name!

Foul language, did I miss some thing, I don't think I used foul language (I think you're referring to moi) I guess different people need different things in life that is why we always have our differences ain't nothing wrong with that. Remember, one person's pleasure is another person's poison. I thought I eliminated the poisons and discovered what it was to enjoy pleasure again and again..

forget what I've said, it was just another joke, (like my friend Anas once said)... but let me tell you I discovered University the hard way.
University is not that hard nor does not cradle you. The system is not designed this way. You have to identify the opportunities that are provided and commit yourself toward taking full advantage of them,
DISCOVER YOUR STRENGTHS AND COME TO TERM WITH YOUR WEAKNESSES, PEOPLE BE TRUE TO YOURSELF AND ENJOY THE HAPPINESS THAT FELLOWS. I AM

WISH ME LUCK, DECEMBER 18 IS MY LAST EXAM.
I WISH YOU THE SAME.. REMEMBER THIS IS ONLY PLAIN TALK NOTHING ELSE.

A simple man

Hi

I'am a student attending columbus state college in Ohio.
The problem is not the lack of somalian students who progress in an institute of a higher aducation but the somalian sociaty, for example in my college you see alot somalian who pass each other on the treet with out saying a simple hello, so you see the problem is the lack of somalians socialising with one another. if they were to socialise they wouldn't need to follow or adopt the ways of americans and african-americans and be in this mess.
