Nasra, men like to have cash and flexible hours. So the cab is an ideal job for them. They are their own sorry boss.
Instant cash enables them to buy qaat etc. and the flexible hours enables them to sleep during the day. You know they are like bats...fiidmeer.
You will hear sorry stories that cabbie business is good at night bla bla.
The truth of the matter is that they are not ambitious and they lie to themselves about plans they never implement. They are lame dreamers.

Hey ladies, why this male bashing coming out from you?

We know that most of these guys are hardworking men who have wives just like you and children.
These guys also support relative back home.

Do you know that most of the immigrants who immigrated to the states started doing these kind of jobs that our brothers are doing? Those old immigrants's children are now the ones running the country.

Most of these Somali guys are close to forty years old and most of them have education or some sort of training, but the money they would be making they started persuing is not close to the money they are making now. The money they are making know really feeds families and it really enables them to have freedom.

Most the Somalis are freedom lovers and most of them are really entrepreneurs. They like to be their own bosses--- besides most of these cab drives came to America with their children. if they find a job, they would be making the kind of money they make driving by taxi.

I know two friends of mine who drive a taxis and drive their kids to school in the morning and bring them back home after school while working. They can affort to take a break from their work. These fathers really take care of their kids. They make sure that their kids have the best attention. They work with their children's homework after school. They take them to the masjid for afternoon Qaranic learning. If they had other jobs, they wouldn't have had this kind of flexiable hours to be with their kids.

They told me this(and they are not lying about it) that they make about eight or nine hundred dollars a week driving taxi----canshuur la'aan...that is very good. I went college and have a professional job and I’m not making that kind of job money after tax. If I had a family or a wife and children, I would have to be doing some lots of over-time hours to be making that kind of money.

There are some lazy cab drivers who are young man, but most of the taxi drivers are not what you are trying to make it seem.

Dear Nasra,

Not all Somali cab drivers are non educated men.
I know some of the cab drivers who have degrees from Lafole or Gaheyr. These cab drivers you are talking about have degrees in engineering, accountant, businesss, geology,etc......;however,
some of them can't work with the degrees they have coz they either came with different name or they have family and relative to support.
There are some cab drivers who are young and lazy like Yusuf said, but majority cab drivers are well over thirty years old.

Salaamu calaykum

Wow! Yusuf and Maha you have both made excellent points. Give me a hardworking man that earns xalaal money and who is responsible anytime.

Not all men are alike and I see NOTHING wrong with driving a cab. As long as I see my brother getting up and providing for his family I feel pride in my heart.

So to all my sisters don't ever think that education makes the man. What makes a man is more than a degree hung on a wall. A man is the one who is willing and capable of taking care of his family and is not afraid of taking any "xalaal" job in order to provide for his family.

To all my Allah fearing and hard working brothers: may Allah bless you and reward you.

Peace

Truly, cab-driving is a very dangereous job. How many somalis are killed in Boston/Minnepolis/Seattle/San Diego, etc? However, I truly salute those who do it with sincere heart to support their family -- both demostic and international. One thing that I ALWAYS love about somalis...is that they take care those whom God obligated to take care -- family, relatives, etc. A proof of this, just visit the nearest Hawillaat Office -- it makes you wanna say; "God bless SOMALIS!"

I also value of education -- but first things first. Those who have family to support -- education seems unneccesary for them kids do not know "daddy" or "mommy" is getting a degree...but they will always KNOW and say; "i'm hungry!"

I feel disgusted when I see a somali man who does not raise a family or help his family back home...and does not educate himself. And, similar, I feel empowered when I see a somali man working his ass off to make the ends meet for his family.

Cajabo,

I like your definition; God bless you!

TO all others,

Nice discussion!

Peace, Ahmad!

Jibriil, if someone has a degree and continues to be a cabdriver, then he is not trying too hard to find a job. Finding a job is a tough task that requires dogged presistence. Looking for a job is a fulltime job. Sometime ago, when I was looking for a job, I had the attidue of sending resumes, when I see a postion somewhere. Nothing was happening. Then, one day I was talking to this white American guy who was also looking for a job.
He told me every week he sends 100 resumes to companies. He throughly researched 10 companies every week by reading their prospectus and annual report (this info is available either in libraries or by calling company). This guy used to call the 10 companies and ask for informational interviews. He got offers, and he chose the one that met his needs.

The moral of the story is: If the white man is going the extra mile to find a job, shouldn't we be doing more, considering the fact that we have to deal with racism and (for us women, sexism).
I don't think one has to change his/her name or priciples to get a job. But one should do their utmost. It is very important to establish a network of contacts. One should start early, by volunteering at least one hour a week while in school, doing internships, attending conferences and even offering to volunteer at conferences. Always, have a resume handy when you attend conferences and expos. I once got a job by distributing my resume to conference attendees. (at this particular event when people where introducinmg each other, I told them, I am looking for a job, and I had multiple offers!!!)

Now, if I were a cab driver, man, I would network with the passengers. I would have my resume and just distribute it to all the passengers.
IT IS NOT A CRIME TO SPEAK WITH PASSENGERS, WHY CAN'T CAB DRIVERS TAKE ADVANTAGE AND NETWORK WITH THEM.
ps.
Occassionally hitting on a sister is not the kind of networking I am talking about guys:)

Anyway, I am not judging anyone. If someone is happy to be a cab driver, then so be it. I just know life would be easier if someone has job with secure benefits and health insurance.
