The reality is that alot of people were educated in a different language and had to start from scratch.I suspect you are one of these people as you made the common Somali mistake of substituting b for p. But I would like to tell that every one is free wether they want to study in top uni's or in any Uni's, or if they want to go for employemnt or do watevery that they want. the bottom line is that we are not all the same each one of us has an ability to do wat they want orwat they can. What is the secret of success in the west u may ask? Hard work is the answer bro and sis. Instead when all the Somalis in my class were engaged in a tribal conflict in school, I was at the library reading and taking advantage of the resources that was originally meant to be used by the natives-the goverment did not opened the school for somalis but for their own citizens. When the Somalis were at home watching L.A confidentials, Eastenders and ER (isn't this what they watch?) I was at my room doing my home work And as the Somalis listen to buff daddy and assimilate themselves into a society which merely regards them as nothing more than animals, I am at uni trying to get some thing out of it to take it back to my country-or the village (do we live in a counry or just in villages and towns?) The message I am trying to convey to you brothers and sisters is that when we are given an opportunity- which we can't get it in our own country- we must take it and if we blow it we must not use our background to justify it. U can't kill a somali in this country and say to the judge "but judge we kill each other in our own country". By the way why do we still have tribalism and clans as a means of identification when we can use PIN numbers, Passport numbers and other to identify our selves.?

| | Saturday, October 21, 2000 - 09:01 pm The reality is that going to a top university does not guarantee squat in the competitive job market.Alot of the new universities(in the uk) have more vocational degrees rather than traditional ones and many employers are slowly beginning to realise that these skills are much more applicable.Another factor is that the newer universities tend to have strong links with industry and can have higher employment rates.The standard of your degree is much more important as this not only reflects your ability as well as commitment. The elitist system is dying fast in the UK and well rounded individuals with good communication skills and varied interests from all sorts of academic backgrounds are rewarded(within reason). I think you are living in a fantasy world if you think these people who chose a well balanced approach to education will get nowhere.It may make you feel better temporarily but it is lazy thinking. Out of curiosity are you the fine somali brother in the specs and tank top I saw in intercollegiate halls last year?

SO THEREFORE I CONCOLUDED THAT THEY PRB HAVE ACHIEVED THIS POSITION THROUGH OTHER MEANS (eg: wealth, background etc..) its a concrete fact that many highly talented students miss out on the oppourtunity of preparing a degree at this college NOT becouse of a lack of ability BUT because of their background, class, race, wealth, gender etc.. so 2 my honrouble brother who kicked off this debate, please and please consider the facts, before jumpin into conclusions. thank you, and piece from may be on all of our souls..inshalah ps.. there are 30 somali origin students in all at cambridge at this moment in time, and theer are 35 somali students @ oxford in case any 1 is interested.... so AT THE END OF THE DAY IS ALL HOW HARD YOU WORK AND LUCK.

| | Friday, October 27, 2000 - 03:04 am I entirely support what Said said because we-somalis- come to the west and say: (1) We can have as much children as we like, because it is the white man and his welfare state that will look after them; (2) We need not to work hard, because we can use your background as an excuse-we r refugees-this does not mean u can't work hard and go to decent uni.(the real reason is we just want to claim income support and don't go to work) (3) we need not to go to higher education because our family are starving to death in somalia-one of the more reasons why u should go to uni. So stop blaming said because if u read what he fundamentally meant in his e-mails-which many of u did not bothered to think about- is that he really wanted somalis to work hard and go to decent uni so they can get decent job after graduation and support their families back in somalia.

After reading what u all have to say about the issues I have raised in this directory, i can only say i am not fully satisfied on how my questions were answered nor the answers i got. Nevertheless, this topic is getting bit 2 boring and thus wished to eliminate the topic-not that u have proven me wrong. Let us discuss how to improve somalia's education system. for the 1st time.
