     | Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 07:33 pm To Whom Ever Cares About The Future Of Somalia; I don't know if anybody else noticed this with me, all the other nations have many poeple in school but Somalis have the least number of students in school. I attend a college in Minnesota, and there are many Sudanes, Indians, Haitians, and many other nationalities, but there are about five Somalis in colleges here. Most Somalis are killing themselves on hard labor jobs where they never get to save enough money to help their families back home. So my question is why are we so interested in dead-end jobs and never think about a brighter future for ourselves and our country. Concerned Somalian Guy

Yahye It is true that most of the Somalians here in MN don't go to Universities, or colleges,because of many reasons, such as:- First they have to work in order to send money to their families,or siblings, 2nd, They are dissapointed about the whole idea of getting education after many years of no schooling whatsoever, 3rd- They never went to school, and it's hard to start all over,including new language and new system. And many more, so bro don't charge them if you are one of those who Almighty Allah made them easier for this life. May Allah's grace be upon on you and your education. sis from MN.

Most Somalis youth have been without education since the civil war in Somalia. That means they have had missed so much that they don't know where to start now. So, we need program that will help them prepare for college.

| | Friday, October 06, 2000 - 04:11 am hi bro i know what u saying hear in england there a lot of somalis that don't go to colleges or uni, if those in manhatan are working it is good think to tell u the truth, why u bro have not seen london, most of them stand aroud,que up for money, where in USA/ are working to suppport their family that is good... i personally disagree of taking refugee money, but been honest not a lot of poeple try to look for work, u can not survive to support u're family and at the same time pay rent. but if one of us allah made easy for like e.g family are all hear and u do not need to support anyone that is good, u can do all the thinks u want.

It's not because i support my family back home they are here, that's good i don't need to worry sending them money. It's because our families expect the same effort from us whether they are in somalia or abroad. I'll give you examples have you ever missed lectures or exams because your mother or granny insisted that you take her to somewhere. While you are preparing to go to the library how many times have you been asked to go and get milk for the kids and when you get back to take your (eedo) to her house and on the way back drop (catar) to (habaryar's) house. Nothing changes everyday is the same... just new things to deliver (full time delivery job). When am i going to study?, don't tell me when i come back because by then i need a break. I speak three languages, got good grades at college, but nothing seems to be going right now. What do you suggest people? ( Please don't suggest to move out the house, doesn't work).

| | Saturday, October 07, 2000 - 07:45 am In My opinion I don't think there is only one or two things to pin point this problem, but it's all about how much need and determination could someone have to reach for the stars (bright future). If we talking about the whole somalians regardless their geographical location then it's beyond those problems you guys mention above, like for instant early 1990's Canada was providing free colleges and Universities for those who qualify (you have to go through high school regardless of your background to attend to higher education) just few of them made it through it. I think to really got the bottom of this issue we need to go back beyond last decade and see if this pattern of behavior is consistent of what we see now in our society. I WAS TOO YOUNG AND ALSO ALONE. HOWEVER THAT DID NOT STOP ME FROM GOING TO SCHOOL.IN VIRGINIA I DID NOT KNOW ANY ONE AND THE FAMILY I CAME WITH WAS EIGHT PLEOPLE NONE OF US KNOW EACH OTHER IN FACT WE NEVER SEE EACH OTHER AGAIN UP TO NOW. ANYWAY THE PERSON WHO BRING US SAID, THIS IS AMERICA EVERONE WAS GOING TO COME AMERICA AND HERE YOUR SO IS UP TO YOU GUYS WHERE YOU GOING AFTER NOW ON.
