At least one hold-up is reported every night, are we going to sit on our butt and take it, or are we going to stand up to these thugs and keep our community safe. Where is the unity everyone is talking about.. we must stop the robberies.

I have tried to call them as soon as I heard what was going on in Columbus, and all they could say was: they've heard it too, and what did the Police say/do?. I think its time for us to organize ourselves and go after these robbers, if we don't, there will be more robberies and this time they might kill someone. I've written to the Mayor informing him about our frustration and disappointment with the lack of support from the Columbus police department to investigate and/or apprehend the robbers. Its my understanding that several victims have reported their encounters with the robbers and nothing has been done thus far.

| | Friday, December 22, 2000 - 08:02 am It began about (2) months ago, when three Somalis and a black American guy robbed at gun point a Somali women, they broke into her apartment as I understand, put her in the bathroom and took all of her jewelry and money. In the same week an elderly gentleman (Somali) was robbed as he crossed the parking lot to get his mail, from there it escalated to robbing all but one of the Somali owned businesses including Dahabshiil at gun point, and finally, they started hanging around the Somali restaurants waiting for their victims. It has gotten out of hand, and the so called leaders of the Somali Community are either scared of the robbers or don't know what the hell they are doing. therefore, I'm trying to organize the good people of this city to stand up for their right and fight these thugs. As for you moving to Columbus, it is a very nice city, it has lots of job opportunities and decent colleges and great Universities. I will encourage to join us.

But to answer your question, there is no Immigration Office in Columbus, the nearest one is about 2 hrs away and to be honest, I have no clue how long it takes to complete the refugee application process. I don't know why Somalis gather around Tim Hortons, its not a place where Somalis are treated with respect, yet Somalis are spending great deal of money in that establishment. To answer your question about Somalis planning their future, I think it is up to the individual to decide what to do with his/her life, and we are not in a position to judge people. Possition: Ramp Agent- provide careful handling of customer baggage, cargo and US mail. It pays good and it is a permanent possition. Good luck to those of you who are interested.
