Prince of Columbus Thursday, November 30, 2000 - 12:50 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't hold grudges against people but the fact is: I did point out the reality and that reality bothered you. Mr. Bule, if you don't like the lovely-accelaration that I am driving with my contention, then nothing you could do about it, because your job is not to impose the speed-limit-rules in discussion room, is it? If Waris Dirie or Imaan announce that they are supermodels and self-style role models for Somali people then I don't see nothing wrong if Mr. Bule announces that he is a self-style role-model for Somalis in Ohio because we all know they all are self-style role-models which will fit our proven well known proverb: "nin is faaniyey waa ri' isnuugtay" I would like to tell you very straightforward suggestion, do not confuse the readers mind, and it would be very wise to stay on one name rather than coming up names like Faisa. One other minor advice: each of us make grammatical and spelling mistakes. We always do. But, it is appreciable if you run your spelling checker in your system before posting. Your readers will spend less time guessing the misspelled words. I will address personal issues after Ramadaan but now will focus on other issues. Proceed to below article by Prince of Columbus. The Last Summer At Tim Hurton on Cleveland Ave. By Noble Prince of Columbus It was a hot summer day I went to the nearby Tim Hurton Shop, a place that has become a very popular gathering spot to many of the expatriate Somali community in this town of Columbus Ohio, where they come to exchange information or catch up with the latest news on the ever-changing saga of the events back home. Sitting in groups of four or more men in close proximities, they talked and attentively listened to each other, all eyes apparently fixated to whom ever did the the loudest talk of that moment. Intensely they all seemed eager to learn about something, some important event that must have occured recently, each one of them visibly in hurry to be among the first to learn about latest scoop. In the air, the combined voices of various groups of men talking at the same time as if in competition for the airwaves takes a different tone, fusing together and forming a single and constant humming noise, the description of which falls somewhere in between the buzzing sound that a swarm of african killer bees make when disturbed, and the deep toned sounds Budhist monks make when chanting their sacred prayers. Like you'd expect, each of the groups seems to be discussing a separate topic, topics that ranged from politics, warfare, business and everything in between. After an initial cultural jolt, the employees of this shop now seem to have gotten used to the way of the Somalis, and become a bit more tolerant to the sometimes strange manners of some of their customers, like the tendecy of one particular guy to carry at length a loud discussion across the tables, shouting to another guy at the other end of the store, stunning and shouting over the heads of everybody else. Necessity being the mother of all inventions, the cashiers have come up with a clever form of shorthand oral communications in their interactions with their new customers, all of it due to the fact that some of them have just come to the United States, and speak little or no english, so in a way, one might say it has become a business necessity to somehow find a way to understand their requests. Recently the management of this place has even taken additional right steps towards emproving the relations with their customers to the point of even hiring a couple of Somali employees working at this Tim Hurton shop, the only thing missing now is a sign that reads : WE SPEAK SOMALI ! I could hear one guy complain about someone wrecking his car, and then leaving him stuck with this huge repair bill, another one was discussing about his plans to go to college and study Computer Sciences. At another table there were a group of Cab drivers apparently exchanging notes about the tricks of their mean trade, and then every once in a while bursting into a gangster-like laughter. At another table two guys were locked into a heated debate on the political future of Somalia, each one of them sticking to his own version of the story, one of them apparently having made up his mind about any kind of government, and planning to have none of it , while the other argued parsuasively on the merits of an Islamist form of government, "why not give a chance ?" he parsuaded, "they are all the same, these politicians, greedy politicians !" the other one replied. On my left hand, another group is discussing about the intricate tactics of luring the enemy clan's militias into a deadly ambush, with details so elaborate and methodical that the only things missing were the charts, maps and the toy technicals. Amidst it all, a very familiar event was taking place in the far corner of the store, a guy was flirting with the waitress: " hey babe, whats up, feeling the heat today ? me too, smile smile, wink wink...", not really but you get the point. Sometimes the humming of the collective voices will stop altogether, and only then you'd be able to become aware and hear the voice of the very few female customers in the store, you'd also hear and realize that all along, there was cool Jazz playing in the backgroud , a fitting soundtrack to this surreal scene. Smokers were banished from this Tim Hurton Shop long ago, so in the heat of this summer, some chimney-heads were standing outside sweating profusely and blowing smoke into the smoldering air. I got an interesting in checking out the tags of some of the cars that were parked there, they were from states all over the USA, from Tenn, Pennsylvania, California, from Georgia, Florida, Utah , Texas you get my point, these are the real Nomads. muudey Saturday, December 02, 2000 - 10:26 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- REP columbus in house niggas, You guys need to go back Ottanga..don't ever.. ever ...talking my cols. boring columbus dirty bitches and pussy niggas peac all my niggas columbos faysal abdirasaaq mj salaad peac love SPARKLE Sunday, December 03, 2000 - 01:35 am -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- YO COLUMBUS....I'M REALLY HAPPY TO HEAR THAT Y'ALL HAVE HOPE FOR THAT BORING PLACE......KEEP HOPE ALIVE SOMALIS. Karim K Monday, December 04, 2000 - 02:27 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- hi. although i don't like posting ideas in public places and wreagling againest someone, i have seen it's important to write this short and withy message addressing to the new refugees that arriving to Columbus from all over the world, to take an advatage of this city and meet the apertunity that they never discovered where they were living before Columbus.. and then himuliating the city and it's great people regardless of their nationality and gender..as the matter of fuct what we all have in commen is that every one of us dreaming about Columbus wether you are in United state or else where..i have seen minesota, Michigan, Indiana, California, virginia and Toronto Canada, they all thinking about to Columbus Ohio..for example in 97 i went to Visit some relatives in Toronto and i was my way to the mosque to attend the Asar prayer.. on the loppy of the mosque there is two guys one of them was saying i wana go to to Columbus Ohio cause i have heard that they offering a free housing and a free schools and you can make a good money whith driving a cab with those free things..fortunetly those two guys didn't knew that i live in Colombus Ohio..then they should questioneer me till the next prayer. for those of you saying Columbus is that and that, you could be the one i have met on that mosque or simular to him..plaim a person who called you and told you all that, not the city and the people ..ok and finaly let's be realistic and thank god then Columbus.. cause you was either welfear collector or jobless at the donet with a bad credit cellphone, this city made your live worth living, and made you the man you are now. if you have any comment i wouid like to share with you.. drope it here or E-mail me at Baxnaan24@yahoo.com thank you all and Ramdan Mubaarak. Prince of Columbus Monday, December 04, 2000 - 06:57 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I agree with sister Kariim and Papa-ru that Columbus is a beautiful city and alive. However some folks out here wanna make the city look boring, perhaps, they work long hours these folks and miss most of their time while they're working Having said that, I would whole-heartly suggest them to make appointment with Prince of Columbus to expunge the new-plans invented by Prince of Columbus so that the rest of their life they won't get bored again in Columbus. My new-plan will come up soon after ramadan. Another development that I wanna discuss with you reer Columbus is the increased robbery in Somali stores. So called President of Somali Community in Columbus led by a confused Merahan man is not doing good job. What is going on our city? why police ignoring protection for Somali Community? are the police officers doing a good job? Please help me with more information here as I plan to write a letter of complain to mayor Coleman. He thinks that I'm giving a bad impression of Eid. No way that is not Price of Columbus's intention. Papa, we all happy to celebarate the Eid, nontheless, many people would baffle why PAPA-RU is talking about Eid, why not the importance of this month of Ramadaan? Well, if you would like to talk about Eid food only then you are not serious about Eid indeed. When Eid celebration approaches, people would talk about wearing their best clothes, going to mosques, organasing gathering, giving money to children. Food would be the least to talk about it. If your stomach is bigger than ours, we will not have other alternative to feed you for Somali food but to give you a suggestion Prof. Nuddy is looking someone who got big size stomach (-: (-:I know you are the man. Hanna Prince of Columbus Sunday, December 10, 2000 - 08:37 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks Jamie Pietras for passing me this article through e-mail. Capital Park: African Village In the wake of civil wars back home, Somali refugees forge new lives in Columbus by Jamie Pietras Along the sidewalks and open areas around the Capital Park housing complex on Columbus' East Side, women wearing veils and henna tattoos get on their knees and pray solemnly to Allah. Inside one of the small, two-bedroom apartments, the flowery fragrance of incense wafts through the air while and the sound of women singing traditional African hymns resonates throughout the building's hallways. For residents in a neighborhood dotted by run-down liquor stores and strip-mall night clubs, these scenes are not as unusual as one would think. Actually, it's becoming the norm. If the names applied to other Columbus districts founded by immigrants held true here, this neighborhood could appropriately be called African Village. On Columbus' northeast side and other scattered parts of the city, a new subculture is emerging--people trying to forge a delicate balance between ancient Eastern customs and 21st-century American consumerism. They're a people bearing both the psychological scars of war and the optimism of immigrants from generations past. They bring with them traditions as nomadic ranchers and a deep-rooted sense of Islamic values. As word gets out about job availability and the low cost of living here, Columbus is quickly becoming the top destination for Somali immigrants to the United States. And as more and more Somalis arrive, social service and governmental organizations here are challenged with keeping up with their needs. The influx of Somalis to the United States began after that country, along the eastern coast of Africa, erupted in civil war in 1991. Fighting that continues even today devastated the nation's political, economic and educational structures. Somalis hoping to escape the violence fled to refugee camps in neighboring countries like Kenya and Ethiopia as they watched their country fall apart from afar. In the mid-'90s, thousands in the refugee camps began to look west for a new beginning. In 1992, 500 Somalis immigrated to the United States. By 1995, that number jumped to nearly 3,500. The U.S. Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services put a cap on the number of Somali immigrants accepted for fiscal year 2000--no more than 18,000. Most first settled in the western part of the United States, in cities like San Diego and Minneapolis and also in Washington, D.C. But as the immigrants became more accustomed to their new country, they realized there were more jobs and lower costs of living found elsewhere. With its low unemployment rates and abundance of service-sector jobs, Columbus was a goldmine of opportunity. "Somalis are a very communicative society," adds co-worker and fellow immigrant Jama Abdikarim. "They talk to each other, they communicate, the phone line's busy all day. So the Somalis are all over the country and, wherever they are, we know which state is the best to live and which is the worst to live. You go outside right now and you can see a lot of different tags on license plates--California, Virginia, Florida. They're all trying to settle here now." Social agencies and government officials agree that Columbus' Somali population is on the rise, but there's no way to say exactly how many are moving to Franklin County. The U.S. Census lumps Somalis in the "black" category, and Immigration and Naturalization Services provides only national statistics and data for the 20 most populous metropolitan areas. There's no official gauge on how many Somalis live in central Ohio. "The unusual thing about Columbus is that Somalis and others come here as secondary migrants," said Jane McGrew, community liaison for Community Refugee and Immigration Services. "Like you or I, if we moved someplace we don't have to sign anything that says, `We're living in Oklahoma now.'" Nevertheless, estimates of the size of Columbus' Somali population abound, and they vary depending on who you talk to. "We estimate it now to be around 16,000 or 17,000," said Franklin County Commissioner Dewey Stokes. Social workers say the number is significantly lower. McGrew estimate a Somali population of about 9,000 in Columbus, though it continues to grow every day. In just one night last week, 72 Somalis moved here, McGrew said. He predicts the number will reach about 15,000 by summer. When Somalis arrive, they usually stay with relatives until they can find housing of their own. This can mean as many as seven family members cramped together in two-bedroom apartments at complexes like Capital Park or Southpark, another low-income development near Cooper Stadium. Those without family ties may take shelter at any of six congregations through the YWCA's Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN). Right now, there are three Somali families staying in the family shelters, an unusually high number, according to IHN Director Elane O'Rourke. There's usually no more than one Somali family staying in the shelters at one time, O'Rourke said. "The ones who are coming now probably have it a little easier than the ones who came in the first 8,000 to 9,000, because they've got leads on jobs," said County Commissioner Stokes. "They hit us real hard in the food pantry area last year... We couldn't figure out why at the beginning, but it was an influx." While language and cultural barriers are most difficult to overcome, the adjustment from African tropics to cold Midwestern winters is not easy either. "We don't even have a word for snow," said Abdul Gulaid, a manager at Maka Market and Halal Meats, 2269 Morse Rd. "When you come here you need someone to guide you on how to dress," added American Somali Association volunteer Ahmed Elmi. "People catch colds." Elmi hopes his organization will help Somalis in all aspects of their transition to the U.S. A fledgling organization with a small, two-room office at 3292 Maize Rd., he and executive director Mohamoud Hassan provide translation services and give advice on housing and other legal issues. "I see mothers crying all the time because they complain about housing management," said Hassan. Often, Somalis don't know their rights as renters, and wind up locked into expensive or unjust leases. The group hopes to establish relationships with Somali mental health experts, to provide counseling services for those traumatized by the civil war back home. "It's very difficult for an American doctor to understand a Somali who's been traumatized in Africa," Elmi said. They see another void in Columbus as well. There are no venues for Somali song and art. "We're not used to Western culture," Elmi said. "We can't go to discos." Alcohol is strictly forbidden in traditional Islamic societies. Both groups agree more resources are needed to aid the community. "We need to get assistance. We need help," Somalis said. "This community needs more than one community organization. They need two or three." Columbus Public Schools has also tried to respond to the needs of the new immigrants. As hundreds of non-English speaking Somali students began pouring into the school system in the last few years, the Columbus Board of Education approved the creation of two "Welcome Centers" at Mifflin International and North Education Center last year. The centers offer a year-long program where immigrant children are taught English, math, science and social studies. "It's giving those youngsters a year of transition," said program overseer Ken Woodward. Courses in English as a second language are offered at six high schools, five middle schools and 13 elementary schools across the city. But the welcome centers have a capacity for only 100 middle school and 100 high school students. Woodward hopes the centers' capacity will be expanded, and opened to students for more than just one year. "That's something I have to pose to [school administrators] and the board of education," Woodward said. "I think the system would be willing to make adjustments. There has been a commitment. I don't see them backing off." The impact of Somalis on the public school system goes beyond new educational programs. Last year the schools began offering alternative meals at elementary schools for students whose religious beliefs include dietary restrictions. Cafeterias switched to hot dogs that don't include pork, a forbidden food according to traditional Muslim beliefs. "A New Life" As generations of immigrant communities have done before them, Somalis have taken on the challenges of their new country with an entrepreneurial spirit and an unfaltering work ethic. While the overwhelming majority work in service or manufacturing jobs, a handful of Somalis are taking their own slice of the American pie. The effect is rubbing off on others. Nowhere is this more evident than at the small plaza near the intersection of Morse Road and Cleveland Avenue. It's the cultural hub of Columbus' growing immigrant community and includes four Somali-owned businesses. Along with Gulaid's butcher shop and market, there's African Paradise Restaurant, where Somalis scoop up spaghetti or rice with their bare hands in the traditional dining method. The Somali Entertainment center next door offers a place to relax and play cards or pool. The building also includes Dahabshil Worldwide Services, a travel agency. On the weekends, Somalis congregate along the sidewalks and in the parking lot of the plaza. Inside Gulaid's store, women shop for halal lamb--slaughtered and prepared according to Muslim belief--as well as incense and mango nectar. But selling imported goods to the community is only half of Gulaid's job. As we speak, a young lady comes in and asks the manager where she can find a family doctor. "We do so many things for them," Gulaid said. "Sometimes they feel so helpless, they call us with something they need." Most of Gulaid's goods have Arabic labels, right down to the Coca-Cola cans. And if shoppers are confused about any of the products, the bilingual Gulaid is there to assist them. "They can't read the labels on the food and can't tell the difference between a can of cat food and a can of tuna," he explained. People have called just to ask what time it was, either here or in Somalia. African calling cards are another hot item at the store. For $20, they give callers a half-hour of long-distance to anyplace on the continent. The simple card helps facilitate the word of mouth exchange that brings more and more Somali cousins, aunts and uncles to Columbus. Getting through to refugee camps is a bit tricky, though. Most camps lack phones, so callers must connect to a designated line, where a mediator sits with a telephone in one hand and a two-way radio in the other. Refugees in the camps talk through their radios, and any dialogue lost in the process is filled in by the mediator. Like many immigrants, Gulaid lived at a camp in Kenya before he arrived in Columbus to work at his uncle's store eight months ago. Before the war, he worked at his family business in Somalia exporting livestock. When asked why he made the trek to America his answer is simple: "To seek a new life." Gulaid is not alone. Somali-owned businesses are blossoming up and down Cleveland Avenue and elsewhere on the city's northeast side. Abdirahman Ahmad opened a computer training center at 1752 Huy Rd. about five months ago. A few months later, fellow Somali Hashi Abdiwahab opened his Hamarweyn grocery store a few doors down. Shego Band video store at 2817 Cleveland Ave. doesn't just offer African films; the Somali business also offers tax services, a barber shop and interpretation services. But employment doesn't necessarily translate to savings to the new immigrants. "The Somalis who are working here, mostly they have to send the little money they make back to Africa to help those family members who are left in the refugee camps to survive," said Elmi. "People are not getting reasonable [supplies] to live on [in camps]. What the United Nations is giving is very small and very basic." Tim Horton's, 3475 Cleveland Ave., is another phenomenon in the Somali community. Maybe it's word of mouth support, maybe it's the tea--several Somalis claim it to be the best in the area--something attracts Somali men to the coffee and donut shop in droves. At any given time, young and old men alike can be seen hanging out in the booths around the shop. "It's pretty amazing. It will be pretty empty, then 20 to 30 guys will come in," said manager Stephen Foster. "For the most part, they all get similar things--coffee with three or four creams or sugar." Fellow employee Alisha Johnson has seen both the store and the neighborhood transform firsthand. A resident in the nearby Capital Park low-income housing complex, she never saw a Somali face four years ago. Now the immigrants occupy almost 90 percent of the units in her complex. For Ahmed Shukri, the new community makes for fertile hunting ground. A recruiter for the U.S. Army, Shukri is a familiar face at Tim Horton's and Capital Park. A native of Kenya, Shukri also pops into local high schools looking for prospective Somali soldiers. "The army reserve is giving close to $49,000 for education. That would help a lot of Somalis who don't have the resources to go to college," he said. "I'm a salesman, but on the other hand I'm a part of society. I try to help them." The problem the recruiter faces is one that resonates throughout the challenge of Somali assimilation. Most of the immigrants don't speak English and many young Somalis haven't been to school since the civil war in their homeland began. To qualify for the army, a prospect would first need to pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test, a standardized exam on verbal, math and vocational skills. For most Somalis, the test is a major obstacle. Shukri said he's had three Somali recruits in the last few months, but hopes for more success as Somalis develop basic English skills. While leaders in the Somali community want to see their culture preserved, there is one aspect of their old life they'd like to keep behind them. The war in Somalia erupted between rival clans, with which every Somali was affiliated. There hasn't been much carryover in tension between clans in Columbus, Somali community leaders say. Then again, there isn't much opportunity for it, as 85 percent of Somalis who've immigrated to Columbus belong to Hawadle, Isaaq and minority Darood clans. "We are basically a Somali community. We are trying to get the Somalis together around here," Elmi said.
