     | Unrecorded Date The latest phenomenon in London is the emergence of (would you believe it)Somali 'Gangs'! And I am told they very viscious! I've heard one is called North-East (Tottenham Area), another is East (East of Old Street Area) while another one is simply The West (around Wembley/Southall area). The amazing thing I am made to understand about these 'Gangs'is that they fight only amongst themselves i.e. between one Somali gang against another Somali gang. And these fights usually occur whenever and wherever there is a 'RIWAAYAD'or 'AROOS' in London!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably most of them use drugs and they do not have an opinion other than what they see their friends do and imitate them. Although they are our brothers I would be misleading them if I condone there behaviour cause as it is a beheviour that must be condemned by all. Do they understand what they are doing? I bet they dont. Other than bringing a bad name to the somali community in Uk they also keep hurting themselves. I bet most of them are on drugs cause people with their right mind do not join such groups! They must be condemned!

| | Unrecorded Date What do you expect from a young boy who grew up in Somalia's crazy civil war and whose parents lost everything in the war? These teens have been failed by their parents, their country, their host countries and somalis who came to these countries before them! I used to go to highschool with white Canadainas who get full breakfast, lunch allowance and everything else they need when I had to work many hours to survive. Other kids lived with their families who supported them mentally, financially and morally when my parents, brothers and sisters were scattered through out the world. English was not my language and there was not one somali person who was ready to help me go through those hard years. My grade plans were always to pass the exams! I never thought about getting A+, A, etc. because of my situation. Luckily, I went through high school and university because my parents were very educated people in Somalia and my mother's dream was to see all of us gratuate from university. Everytime I see a Somali youth who is lost in this society, I feel sorry for him/her and bite my lips for those who wasted these young people's minds. I do not blame their parents but I blame whoever is responsible for Somalia's civil war and peope like me who went through hard time and watching other generations to go the same path.

| | Unrecorded Date Anonymous, I applaud you for staying the course and finshing your education. Many youth drop out for lack of guidance and support. You are lucky, because you learned the value of education early on in life from your mother. Shak, condemning gangs does not solve the problem. The gang phenomenon also exists among Somalis in some states, in the US. I was told that there are gangs in Minnesota and in San Diego California. We as a community should be more involved with the youth. We should provide advice and guidance. Eventhough I am not involved in any youth activities, where i live 2 guys (who both work fulltime jobs,) took it upon themselves to be involved with young boys. This 2 guys do not work together, but each manages to involve boys in such activities as tutoring, homework sessions, playing soccer, trips to museums etc. I am sure that none of the boys in these groups will think of joining a gang because they have role models that provide guidance. Why can't each of us volunteer a time to spend with young boys and girls in the communities we live in and prevent them from being vulnerable to gangs? What is preventing us from being proactive in containing the problem?

| | Monday, October 09, 2000 - 03:32 am I live in London and believe me there are fights all time! And some carry guns but its not too common and believe me its always between the west and east. There so stupid they come to wedding that have nothing to do with them and gate crash, if you ever see a wedding down the east there's bound to be a big fight and police. One wedding I saw was a laugh the bride fainted and one woman was taken to hospital coz she got hit on he head with a chair!! RIWAAYAD are worst I know that one guy shot the bouncer down Stratford. There are loads I’ve heard about; coz there's a RIWAAYAD or wedding every week. The old women get in fights too!!!!!  This is all true, no lie
