Disgusted

Sunday, March 04, 2001 - 11:47 am
My recent visit to Somalia has changed me dramatically forever. After almost 15 years of being away from my country I left Toronto, Canada on January 12, 2001 hoping to visit all my family in many parts of Somalia. My first destination in Somalia was Hargeisa where I planned to stay for few days to visit my sister in low. The beauty of the city immediately struck me. Hargiesa airport was calm and quite and even though it was far from being like any other airport in the western countries or like any country that lives in peace, but Hargeisa authorities had made sure that the passengers ware not bothered and that they got to their destinations and families safely. My sister in low and her family welcomed me graciously but what impressed me most were the tenderness and the politeness of the people of Hargeisa. This was to the contrary of every thing I was told when I was in Toronto.

My next stop was Bossaso. Its airport was not any thing like Hargiesa's. People rushed to the airport as soon as our plan landed. We could have easily lost our passports and belongings. However as soon as we left the airport we saw how cosmopolitan the city had became. I have never seen both Hargeisa and Bossaso and I did not know how they looked before the military regime, but from what I gathered from the natives, Bossaso had grown three folds and its population had increased more than five folds. I estimated close to 100,000.00 people living in that city now. This was a city driven by business and every other day ships from the Middle East docked to the Bossaso port. However the most important thing was that Bossaso was also as calm and peaceful as Hargiesa.

After almost a week in Bossaso I left for Galcaio where my father was born before he moved to Mogdisho and made it home and as you can guess I still had family there. It was my first time ever in Galcaio as well. The city was divided in to 4 small districts and every clan lived in their quarter. You could still sense a bit of hostility and easiness among the natives, however the elders and community leaders of that city were doing a great job keeping the peace. Further more, people still remembered what happened in 1991 and didn't want that tragedy to happen again.

It was the first week of February when I flew to Mogadishu. We landed at Bali-Dogle airport at noon. Comparing to the other two airports, this was very much like the one in the jungles of Columbia that we always see in the movies where drug users use to export their drugs. Though at the time of my arrival there was a talk that the new government would take it over, it was still controlled by young men who were carrying AK-47 and ridding in Technicals. There was no law and order what so ever. The airport looked more like a family owned and run business. After a few hours of confusion, we finally managed to leave for Mogdisho. If you think the road to Mogadishu was safe dream on my friends. We had been stopped several times during our short trip to Mogdisho and often we had to pay money. If you think that was the only reason why I am made--- read on.

Mogadishu was destroyed beyond recognition there was no one single construction you could recognize if you lived Mogadishu during Siad Barre's regime. There were many places where anyone would tell not to go. Peace was almost non-existence. Businessmen and women of Hamar had bodyguards whom they paid regularly. The residents of the city were as depressed and unhappy as you could ever imagine. I visited many prominent places that I knew when I was growing up in Mogadishu and there were all gone.

Surprisingly though, people didn't even care or bother the way Mogadisho looked. I couldn't understand whether this was because they too took part the destruction of this once most beautiful and populated city in the whole Somalia or they got tired asking. I asked though, was it Said Barre who did this? My friends the answers that I received even shocked me more. Though Siad Barre did destroy, it was the uncontrolled and disciplined militias led by Aided and USC. "It was like a storm" said one of my relatives "no one predicted this, we got tired of Siad Barre's corrupted regime and wanted him out but we didn't think they would destroy everything and drive away the innocent people of Mogadishu", tears came to my eyes and did not know what to do. Until now, I ask how this unimaginable destruction happened and I wonder if Mogadishu will ever be the same again. One of my friends asked me when I was still in Mogadishu "What did you expect when you were living your country in such a larger numbers? Did you not know that (Reer Badiye will take over)?"

I am mad because many of Somalia is controlled these thugs and the innocent peace loving Somalis are held hostages in the capital of Somalia. I mad because that the new government is even contemplating recruiting these criminals in the countries police force. Moreover, I am mad that the so called "Reer Magaal" and educated Somalis are abroad calling each other names and bragging about the destruction caused by these thugs.

It may be too late to safe Somalia but if we don't get together and find away to make a drastic changes to eliminate these thugs and find an everlasting solution to our minor problems our heritage and existence as Somalis will be gone forever.

DISGUSTED...
Another cheap propoganda ploy by the Puntland Group. Since when do Marjeteens allow anyone who is not Marjeteen to live among them. A Habar Gidir man in Bosaso is like a Sheep in a Hyena Den. It does not happen.
This new illusion of Puntland teaming up with Somaliland will not happen. No one wants your Puntland biz, I hope the Boyz from BaliDogle come visit Bosaso.

Hello Br Disgusted :
You sound if your Sancerre but I also feel your tune little bit a bitterness , Your right our country need to be saved from those you call thugs but other people call Malitia , these people also
are part of the people or also this is their country , they just come from Baadiye or are young's who grow up this problem ... one solution I can see is put them in camps and give them training
of any kind so they can leave on their warlords, Bosses

Disgusted Well, is amazing how people view differently to what you have exprience, I was in mogdishu last month, to what extend in which made you make up such unfound stories about Mogadishu i don't know, my exprience was totaly the oposite. while you compared mogadishu to some jungle in columbia, did you know that Mogadishu is far more safer than many cities around the world including city such as New York, Jonasburgh, in SA. so my brother somalai is here 2 stay and remember this United will always Stand Divided, you ain't getting what you so call clan.. want which is division within somalia..

Long Live somalia..

Disgusted,

I Was there myself, and I have to agree with you most of your analysis; however, you must remember that Hargeisa had a relatively good airport long before the fall of dictator Bare and so does Barbara while, on the other hand, Puntiland cities were neglected completely by the former regime. On top of that, the Puntiland administration is very young when compered to that of Hargeisa.

Also,I must say that the real pictures of cities like Hargeisa isn't that rosy either. For instance, Barbara, my home town's airport was in shambles. I could not even get a washroom when I was there, and when asked, I was told to take a leek outside of the filthy one room airport that was left by Siyad Bare. When I got to Hargeisa, I was shocked to see the amount of despair and suffering that was visible in the eyes of average Hargeysawis.

Yes people of Hargeisa are polite, but that does mean they love me or the rest of Somalis. It is the fact that they know for sure that their lively hood depends on travelers and anyone who is willing to spend US dollars.

They were constantly asking me money for chad and my tribe, and overall, I was not impressed with the people of Hargeysa. Perhaps you were treated differently because of your sister's status.

In addition to that, live was so expensive that I even wondered how so many people with little or no income mange to survive there.

As for how to solve our problem, I think the ball is in their(Reer Mogadishu) court, and there is nothing that we can do to help them solve their internal matters, unless of course, they genuinely show that they ready this time to listen what others have to say about the Somali crises.

we, Mogadishu ppl have nothing against a hero leader from puntland who is honest and ready to do everything for the sake of his country and ppl,,,,,, to me c. yuusuf, he is in the catogory of Aideed, suudi, Aato, shaati and the rest of the warlords,,,,, come up with a real somalian leader like the late cabdirashiid C. sharmake and u will see how we gonna treat him,,,, we gonna respect and listen like the late Cismacil Jimcale,, aadan clle cosman,,, General daa'uud,,, Cllahi cise and more,,,,,,,, One more thin it's good for the somali's and the Puntlanders too if Puntland make progress and we happy for u but don't try to lie us coz we know what is going on and has the same problems that Mogadishu, baydhabo , kismayo has.

HAIR TODAY AND GONE TOMORROW.

What Makes the woman of today
Think tousled hair is pretty?
It looks as though they just got up!
It really is a pity.

They mousse it and they bleach it,
And they twist it into curls,
Then they straighten it and crimp it
To compete with other girls.

They spend their time in beauty shops
While catering to fashion,
With dreams that changing hair styles
Will contribute to their passion.

But maybe all their suitors
Wouldn't really care a fig
If they hid that mass of tangled hair
Beneath a pretty wig!

The redheads want to dye it blonde,
The blondes all want it lighter,
But surely, curly haired brunettes
Tie bonds of love much tighter.

Estelle is not a redhead,
Or a blonde as you can see;
She's just a happy ex-brunette,
Because she married me.

And now I'm sure you'll have the urge
In your reply to say,
"It's only 'cause she married Don
Her hair is turning gray"

But I prefer it just like that,
We've each gone gray together,
And now we make a matching pair
We're both birds of a feather.

And now I'm sure you'll take the chance
To make fun of my words,
But I assure you all out there,
Your mocking's for the birds.

Subject: POEMS

Since I was in England for the last issue, I think I shall dally a bit
before coming back. The first part of the visit to the pub--the 'bitters'
incident did actually happen. I will have to admit that the rest had a
little help from some far-fetched imagination, or something. Anyway--

The Unsolved Mystery at the English Pub

While still in old England, I entered a pub
For refreshing myself with a beer
So I turned to the smiling young pub maid and asked
Do you happen to serve Bitters here?

The smile on her face was replaced by a frown
I thought that away she would walk
"You Yankees are all just alike," she remarked
You haven't yet learned how to talk.

"We have Lager and Pilsner, and other kinds, too
Perhaps you're referring to "Bittah"
No one but a Yank for a Bitters would ask."
I could see she was quite in a "dithah"

"A Yank before you also came to this pub,
I recall that he called himself Bob
And he asked for 'the biggest ol' beer that I served'
He was a blustery sort of a slob."

"When I set a pint on the bartop, he said,
'I ordered a large one, ya hear?
We call that container a shot glass In Texas,
And we use it for whisky, not beer.'

"I'll admit that he got me a little upset,
So then when you asked for a 'Bitters',
I thought, two Yankees in such a short time,
Well, it gave me a bit of the jitters."

So I sipped on my beer as I sat there and mused
Could this a coincidence be?
There are hundreds of Texans who call themselves Bob--
No, no-It just couldn't be he !

So I left Merry England and returned to the States
And to this day I've yet to find
The identity of Bob, that blustery slob,
So I'd best put it out of my mind

Shelby M. Forrest

Bob? Bob? Anybody know a Bob??

Hmmm ... speaking of "bitter" experiences, this one will give you
the Willies for sure. It was included in the Gibbs Smith publication,

Thought I would share a travelin' lesson with the folks what read--
these bits of rhyme, from time, when there's nuthin' else to
do, in a travelin' bind, folks you may find,.. a message here for you!

Dinin' Out

Tex went down to the feedstore
And signed up to win a trip.
To leave out of Houston, Texas
On a leaky sailin' ship.

Well, shore enough his name got drawed
For a trip to New York City.
Where there weren't too many cowboys
But they said the girls were pretty.

And Tex had always wanted to
Do other things as well.
Like order up a fancy meal
At a shore first class hotel.

'Cause he had always heard the Waldorf-
Astoria was the best.
So he ordered up a T-Bone steak
To put 'em to the test.

Yes sir, the stuffy waiter said
As he acts somewhat discreet.
And turns his nose up when he sees
What's on the cowboy's feet.

Heck, Ol' Tex had on his workin' boots
All scuffed and showin' wear.
Boots that's seen a heap of wearin'
But seen very little care.

So the prissy waiter went on back
And turned the order in.
Then 'fore Tex could catch his breath
The guy was back again.

He said, I've brought your soup, Sir
And with very little tact.
He set the bowl in front of Tex
But Tex, he shoved 'er back.

And said he didn't order soup
That he had ordered meat.
Sent it back into the kitchen
'Cause it wudn't fit to eat.

But the waiter come back with the soup
Said the cook's some mad, no doubt.
So Tex he says, "Forget it"
Grabs his hat and storms right out.

So about the time that Tex gets back
To his room, the guy next door.
Has a fit and falls a kickin'
In the middle of the floor.

Well, they calls this Lady Doctor
Who says no need to worry.
Then prescribes a soothing enema
To be brought up in a hurry.

So these two husky hombres
Go to Tex' room by mistake.
And said he didn't have no choice
That an enema, he'd take.

And proceeded to administer
What Doc said would make him better.
Told Tex to do what he was told
Or it shore 'nuff would upset 'er.

Well fin'ly Tex he makes it home
And the Boy's all want to know.
About New York and the things he seen
And the places he did go.

Ol' Tex, he just ignores 'em
And don't have much to say.
But they just keep on a pesterin'
Through the night and through the day.

So fin'ly Tex he loosens up
Says I'll give you guys some poop.
If you ever dine at the Waldorf, Boys
....BE SURE TO EAT YOUR SOUP!!!

Hi Gerry,

I took to heart, some of the quotes you submitted in issue#45 of POEMS and
as a result I have grown a thicker skin with my new found philosophy.

CONSIDER THE SOURCE

When people say unkind things, or slander me even worse,
I always salvage my feelings by just considering the source,
"I appreciate your slander" I say, " honestly, I really do,"
Considering how the unkind words only came from you,
For to paraphrase what Gerry said, in something that he sent,
An insult from a source of ignorance, is but a compliment.

Many thanks!

As one of my Granddaughters would put it, "POEMS is so fun!"

Credit Where Credit is Due

Those are Mary's words you're paraphrasing, Chuck, they were supposed
To merely show that the idea retained its meaning when transposed.

I said that compliments from morons only manage to insult,
She said demeaning words from dullards have a positive result.

But then, it doesn't matter which remark was best, or which was worst,
For I think we both were quoting some one else who said it first!

I think it is likely that most, if not all of us have heard the following
aphorisms at one time or another. I have attempted to put them in a form
more acceptable to P.O.E.M.S.

LIFE'S SIMPLE PHILOSOPHIES.

Murphy's Law.
Though jobs appear simple, they're much tougher than you know,
And everything takes longer than expected;
But if something can go awry, it's always sure to go
At the time it makes you feel the most dejected!

O'Toole's Observation.
O'Toole knew Mr. Murphy and he gave his law a twist
By stating Mr. Murphy was a blatant optimist!

Chisholm's Law.
If you think there's improvement in the schemes that you have cooked,
Beware my friend, there's sure to be a fact you've overlooked!

Health Tip.
Two things can damage any heart, on which this life depends,
And they are "Running UP the stairs." or "Running DOWN your friends)"

Hubbard's Observation.
A well dressed man will tell you just what fashion's all about;
Don't buy a badly fitting suit, you'll never wear it out!

Hubbard's Advice.
If you would like to get some milk, the cow will surely yield,
But don't think she'll back up to you while sitting in a field!

Ward's Law.
If we would live a happy life, with joy and laughter through it,
We all must live within our means, though borrowing to do it!

Finagle's Law.
If you should find a job fouled up, just bear in mind this curse;
No matter what you do to fix it only makes it worse!

Idle Note.
In nature we see some mistakes which bring a flood of pity.
I think a camel's just a horse designed by a committee!

Mann's Law.
Whenever something happens even though it never should,
There's always someone in the crowd who says they knew it would!

Wage Earner's Regret.
With the average family budget, though at spending you're quite deft,
At the end of all the money too much month is always left!

Courtney's Law.
If you await promotion you don't need to get the blues.
As the boss's head gets bigger it's a snap to fill his shoes!

Weller's Law.
Nothing is impossible, there's really nothing to it!
The task is always easy if you never have to do it!

Banker's Advice.
Be sure to save your money; to me the reason's plain.
The day might come when money will be worth something again!

Crane's Law.
Don't take too much for granted, take some good advice from me.
No matter what you think you're owed, your lunch is never free!
