     | Friday, March 09, 2001 - 07:28 pm FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Somali Association for Peace and Democracy sapdpress@yahoo.com THURSDAY, MARCH 9, 2001 Washington, D.C Opening today, March 9, 2001, Ethiopia is convening Somali factional warlords in order to undermine Somalia’s Transitional Government established after almost ten years of anarchy. The sole purpose of the conference of warlords in Ethiopia is to “unify the opposition” against the Transitional Government. And the Ethiopian government declared that they are ”happy” to provide these warlords “a venue.” It is no coincidence that other neighboring countries including Kenya, Eritrea, Djibouti, and the Sudan have all refused to recognize these warlords and advised them to “reconcile with their government.” We call upon the Ethiopian Government to join other regional governments and refrain from meddling in Somalia’s internal affairs for the sake of stability of Somalia and Ethiopia, and indeed, for the whole region. These warlords killed tens of thousands of people in the past fifteen years and cost the international community billions of dollars and loss of life. Moreover, Ethiopian Government should not use these men to create hostility between the brotherly peoples of Ethiopia and Somalia. The warlords who are meeting in Addis Ababa today include General Morgan who oversaw the destruction of the North during Siad Barre’s dictatorial regime, Gen.Aden Gabayow, Siad Barre’s former defense Minister, and Col. Abdullahi Y. Ahmed who spent ten years in Ethiopian jail due to his troubles for both Somalia and Ethiopia in 1980s. Among other less prominent warlords are, the son of late General Aidid whose father was responsible for the murders of Americans and thousands of Somalis in 1990s. By aiding these warlords, Ethiopia is perpetuating anarchy in the whole region and creating more instability for Somalia in particular. These men committed gross human rights violations and lack respect for the rule of law which Somalia’s current Transitional Government is attempting to re-institute so diligently. Ethiopian Government’s claims to host these warlords for purposes of so-called “reconciliation” in Somalia is misguided, at best. Reconciliation should be left for the Somali Transitional Government and no other government has the right to interfere in Somalia’s internal affairs in this pretext. Now that Somalia assumed its rightful position at the OAU, IGAD, the United Nations, and other international organizations, Ethiopia’s invitation to convene armed opposition against Somalia is a flagrant violation of the OAU, IGAD, and UN Charters. As a signatory of these Charters that prohibit interference of internal affairs of member nations, Ethiopia should stop exercising destructive policies pitching Somalis against one another. As evidenced by recent moves of the Transitional Government, reconciliation efforts are best handled through dialogue among Somalis themselves. Somali public has demanded that the Transitional Government reach out to its opponents to forge democratic process. And, so far, the government has taken all the right steps to work with the opposition adopting a policy of peaceful dialogue at all cost. This approach is working. Therefore, in the Somali reconciliation process, there is no room for Ethiopia to interfere. We call upon the Ethiopia Government to stop arming and supporting warlords, and instead, work with the Somali Transitional Government in the interest of peace and stability in the region.
