faction or regional leaders have secretly created and financed Organizations with relatively vast journalistic networks in Europe and North America that is available to carryout covert propaganda campaigns. Always available are part-time volunteer clansmen under the shadows of Advocacy Organizations.
Always available are paid-agents: the clandestine writers who use the modern information technology by sending false and unfounded news reports to the international news agencies, the UN and the State Department. One of them - SHASNA-was founded in Boston by a nephew of faction leader Abdullahi Yusuf.
A self-centered group and linked to a violent political movement in Somalia, it provides "favorable" news reports and hate propaganda. Together with original articles the Organization receives materials and documents the faction leader wants publicized. The aim of this group is to damage the reputations of some more credible news agencies and institutions such as the BBC and IRIN whom the faction leader sees as against his self-interest.
SHASNA also regards some individuals such as UN envoy David Stephens and Yusuf Garad of the BBC as an open target.
These clansmen go about their job with real zeal. The Six-month propaganda campaign yielded contradictory reports and editorials in the World Wide Web.
Attempts, though, to disrupt the Somali Peace Process failed. But this does not discourage the masterminds of the operation. Such campaigns are being carried out daily. Doesn't one see in the recent report, "The invaders." The familiar hand of Adbullahi Yusuf? Its aim is to cause friction among the Somali society. It sows suspicions and animosity among the good people of Somalia. The group forces upon others a deliberate misinterpretation of events that may lead to
erroneous conclusions. They viciously distort the intentions of a particular group of people and provoke them, in the hope of aggravating relations among the Somali people. All this is contamination that hampers the development of sound peace and reconciliation and back to the barbarous tribal wars.
Ironically, the faction leader himself fell victim to the "contamination"
intended for others. The Reconciliation Conference and the birth of a Somali Government threw confusion into the ranks of the so-called "Puntland Administration". The faction leader have been finding it difficult to pressure the democratic-minded people of North-eastern Somalia in part due to lack of a clear political alternative and in part due to its growing internal opposition.
Only recently, prominent leaders and elders in the region have all
reaffirmed the fact that the "administration" of Abdullahi Yusuf had done nothing to lead them out of the political impasse. It is quite natural that, having sized up the situation, the dictator had resorted to savage
reappraisals against anyone who has showed the slightest opposition to his "administration". His "police", clan militia and the whole monstrous
repression machine went into action. Evidence exists that at least 154
people were killed in the daily clashes with the "police" between May of
last year and now. International press reports and Amnesty International reported that over 200 intellectuals and elders, and more than 40 political activists and local journalists have been thrown into prison. The Somali Community in the Diaspora were shocked when they watched a video of Abdullahi Yusuf personally kicking and maiming a civilian in Bossasso. The sight was equated with the famous video of LA police beating up Rodney King.
Neither are the economic prospects of the region as bright as the
"administration" claims to be. For years, the regions ruling quarters took
particular pride in its economic advances made possible by the merciless exploitation of the countries marine resources. The world public has long known the dumping of industrial wastes and other hazardous chemicals in the shores of the region. The United nations and other International Organizations possess reports confirming that hundreds of European companies are engaged in the business of dumping chemical wastes in that region.
Such is the political and economic outcomes of the current "Puntland
Administration". Not the pious wishes of SHASNA which is trying hard to create a political climate in Somalia that would only serve their fellow
clansman Abdullahi Yusuf, the Dictator.
