tq | Friday, October 20, 2000 - 10:38 am Bank of Somaliland and Ethiopian Commercial Bank Sign Landmark Letter of Credit Agreement (00:17 Oct 20 2000 ) Bank of Somaliland and Ethiopian Commercial Bank Sign Landmark Letter of Credit Agreement The Bank of Somaliland and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia have signed a landmark letter of credit agreement, reports Jamhuriya, a Hargeisa-based newspaper. The deal is the first in Somaliland since it declared unilateral independence in Somalia in 1991 and is an important step forward for Somaliland's fledgling banking industry. The agreement was signed in Ethiopia on May 30, 2000. The Letter of credit covers the import and export of goods and facilitation of commercial transactions abroad. This agreement will strengthen Ethiopia's links to Somaliland's Berbera port. The Somaliland business community is also expected to benefit as in the past anyone requiring credit was forced to travel to Ethiopia or Dubai. The Somali delegation also met with the Minister of Commerce of Ethiopia and discussed ways of improving the commerce between the two countries. United Nations Development Program - Somalia, through its Capacity Building Facility program, provided the technical support to the Bank of Somaliland to facilitate the above agreement. |
