I came 12 years ago in west Europe at age 17, before civil war started and now I live in U.S.A last three years. I observed that my generation and this new generation are different many ways, especially those in U.S.A. I do not understand why some of our youths behave and write the way they do. My first five years I only seen few Somali and I was forced to adopt not only one culture because my roommates were from different countries. However I never forget where I from and I was proud to introduce my culture every opportunity. Except the job places America is more flexible than Europe and gives more chooses people who have different religion. In Europe they talk about integration, here in U.S.A the word is neutralization. The Somalia young generations are too fast adopting the new culture in North America more than any other refugee group. Some young girls are so shameless that they even misunderstand the norms of North American culture and cross the limit acceptable for average American. Why it should be this way? Is that this new generation lack proper education and missed schools during the civil war? Are they from the low and the poor classes from Somali society? Because the time I came to Europe only students and well respected family use to send their children in the west. Maybe they lived refugee camps in Kenya long time and now they are given lot of freedom which they know how to handle. Where old generation working low wages jobs the young generations are adopting black American culture. Are Somali becoming new generation of black American? I am already a parent for three children and figuring out how to save my children. Apparently it is not easy having many relatives and neighbor lost teen ages

I feel your dissappointment. whether we examine the problem impicitly or explicitly we would at some point reach the conclusion that a lot of our people are Muslim by name.

First of all i have no idea what in somali culture can be classes as of somali "heritage" We have have a mixture of all sorts of cultures and languages superimposed on our's.

My question can a tree stand tall without roots?

Or is there realy any need for cultural identifiers or role models at all... If i might be so bold as to suggest that we need to be obidient to the will of allah[swt] more then we need anything to identify with...

I would suggest to you Diiiye to break a long chain of human practice of giving attention to those that are bad... We should all reward the efforts of those that are doing well for themselves and ignore those that choose to go astray and devalue that which we find crutial components of our lifes.

May be then all young people would start being good and hence be given the attention they need as a result.

It is my believe Allah[swt] creates a solution for every problem and those that seek to find shall find solution by the will of allah[swt].

Diiye i hope and pray allah[swt] provide you with the tools you require to achieve that which is in your heart... When you have done your best altimately you must place your trust in allah[swt].
