sheikh cabdisheelaweyne | Friday, March 02, 2001 - 05:32 am i, sheikh cabdi sheelaweyne think that the journalist who gave this false story to qaran press, should be given the harshest punishment possible, because his accusations are not only defamatory, but they have caused an irrepairable damage to the puntland women and as a result to somali women. if i was presiding over his case , then i would have him executed publicly and at the same time broadcasted live on the local and internation tv. what is your take people anyways, since we now know the facts. |
Cilmiyo | Friday, March 02, 2001 - 05:59 am If one is going to take journalism as a career he has to consider the obligations the public has; which is the truth and whole truth, but once he brakes the law and feeds the public with such a false statement not only should he be punished but his should not be allowed to practice journalism ever in his life time. (Such crimes should not be taken lightly) he was wrong, careless and stupid for doing that to the Puntland Government which is one of the key states who is doing everything in their power to put Somalia on it's feel once more. This gives a mad image to Somalis everywhere for the world look's at as a whole. We know this is fraud: deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain so this FORGERY JOURNALIST should be brought to justice. .....Aslamu Calaykum. ALIDHEERE | Friday, March 02, 2001 - 08:39 am I was surprised by the way IRIN who's controlled by Abdiqasim's brother never mentioned the falseness of this news. Qaran apologized publicly and and others, such as somalinet run the correct version of thet false news. However, IRIN insisted the news took place and never bothered to report the correct version. I am not from Puntland but like you, I am a Somali person and we all have the duty to preserve and protect the only thing that unites us all, Somalihood. |
ahmed | Friday, March 02, 2001 - 12:22 pm I am amazed as you all are, that most media people in Somalia don't excercise what is call "Ethics or Media Ethics". It is disgraceful to report false information and we are not talking about information that has as much magnitude as the one reported on Qaran through as Qaran claimed the reporter who is now in custody of Puntland administration. What is even worse is that some papers or internet sites who were so quick first to print this story are now hesitant to print the truth. One of the sites which I believed is very strong supporter of the Arta Group said, "Puntland Administration denied these allegations but there is no reliable source and that administration is known to denied facts" thus making it true even though they want to say we reported the denial. And Irin as reported above completely refused to retrieve they involvement of the story. This is what I think Somali people should do, particularly Somali Women everywhere. First, never even once did this story reported the clan of the ladies involved even though many people were quick to specalute who they were. Secondly, the story said two Somali women thus it could be any Somali girl. Hence, this story damaged the name of all Somali women, I think we owe an apology to IRIN and any other news agency that did not report both saids of the story. I give lots of credit for Neero(the editor of Qaran) because he first printed an edition that denied the allegations and he also pointed where he got the information. Secondly, he apologizes to his readers and other news outlets that used their information. I think this is class act. If IRIN thinks this is only a Puntland matter then I think it also says something about their news organization in general and their lack of class and truthful information. As far the person who is now under custody, I am not sure if excution is the right thing to do because he didn't kill anybody. But the Quran makes it clear what to do those who commit lie and those who said bad things about Muslim women. He should be punished to the worst pobbible and never allowed to write again because he can't distinguish what is report and his opinion. thanks ahmed |
MULKI | Friday, March 02, 2001 - 01:09 pm I sent 2 e-mails to IRIN to stop the blatant lie about Somali women and they never responded! Is there a disciplinary Committee in the relief network who pays for IRIN's bills? |
Dheeman | Friday, March 02, 2001 - 01:55 pm Mulki, some time ago IRIN in an article about some event in Somalia referred to Habargidir as the biggest clan in Somalia. I sent them an email requesting them to tell me the source of reference (I needed the information for research purposes). Unlike many other new orgnaistions, and UN offices, IRIN didnot even have the courtesy to reply. That shows you their professional level. On more than one occassion IRIN has showed lack of integrity and disrepect towards the public by a) inability to substantiating its sources and b)neither retracting nor apologising for fabricated stories. IRIN is the mouthpiece of habargedir and their cronies. |
Cilmiyo | Monday, March 05, 2001 - 08:29 am As we can see Irin is not a reliable, dependable nor authentic news source so let's be careful where we get our news in the coming future. (stick with bbc) |
