salaama aleykum

brothers and sistas, my name is said and i would like to welcome you here today and share with you some of my thoughts and opinions about the people of somalia, the situation and possible solutions.
hope you as a scholar, elder or a native could give me feed backs on what you think the foundations of the problem is and how it came to be. i know most of you have discussed this issue many times before, but i hope today your feedback can get us a step closer to a "solution".

please do not hesitate to tell us your true feelings about issues conserning the people of somalia, cause you alone matter.

many would agree with me that one of the problems facing somali people is miscomunication, and i hope we will take care of that problem here . we are here to listen so speak up!

one more thing, please keep this a respectful place and lets respect one another.

and i stress this to everyone...."Everyone's opinion counts!" no one is wrong and no one is right.

Example; topics you can discuss

A)Culture B)Tribes
B)Economic situation C)Religion
D)Education E)Elders or Teens
F)Political system and many more

and describe or argue how these factors effect the somali people as a whole, and what a possible soulution might be

thank you
mahad sanid

hello, me again
(my thoughts)

In my opinion, i think a large percentage of somali people lack education. therefore education is the root to many of our problems.
forexample, i think if more people were educated
we wouldnt have the problem of tribal conflicts and discriminations. the reason is , most of the people that still live in tribal ways are in the country side , not in the cities because in the cities you find schools and education. people are busy workin or learnin instead of worrying about fighting another trible.
second, i think lack of education cause many somalians to loose their culture, their will to help their country and maybe even their religion. we have many men that eat "jad" every day and dont have a successful job, why? because they are un educated.
i can keep goin with my examples, but i want to give you the chance to speak your mind

to conclude , i would say education is an important factor in the somali people's problems and if we take care of that, by gettin more people educated we might have a chance to rebuild a greater "SOMALIA"

thank you

Hi Skyhigh

I will write to you some more tomorrow, as it is geting late, but I don't think our immediate problem is education, or mis-communication but lack of law and order, and government.

SKY HIGH,

I dont know what the objective is here but let me point out some contradictions in your analysis.

You started by urging us to be respectful, yet you start your contribution by insulting our intelligence. You said " large percentage of somalis lack education" I think this analysis is flawed and self defeating. If education is equated to civility and justice ! then how do you explain the discrimination and injustice that the afro-americans suffer in the United States ??

They have been excluded from positions of power,,,they have been denied their share of the socio-economic pie for no other reason than the fact that they are BLACK.

So, if education is ment to erase this problems
then how do you explain injustice in America ???

Let me remind you, that hundred years ago there were less educated Somalis than we have today. We did not have a university in Somalia, yet there was peace, there was an absence of this type of barbarism that we seen.

Your tribe analysis is equally weak and simplistic.

You say " Most People still live in tribal ways" This is the kind of language that one would expect to come across when reading "white" literature. Western analysts which are racist tend to depict other cultures as backward, uncivillised and inherently barbaric.

One may further ask what is a tribe from a social science point of view, and why do western scholars use the term exclusively when they are talking about non white cultures ???

Have you ever heard of the Swedish or the Greek or any other ethnic group from Europe reffered to as a tribe ? NO. Why Not ??? there is only one explanation, RACISM.

It is a term that is loaded with all sorts of Racist connotations, thats why its reserved for Africans and other non white cultures.

There has always been people from different ethnic groups living in Africa, after all its the cradle of Humanity.

So why are people fighting each other all over sudden ? The answer to this question lies beyond the "tribe and education" factors.

Its about power and control of resources,,,,who has the power and who wants it. Groups A has the power and group B feels it has been neglected and abused,,, hence they decide to fight group A and take the power from them.

If you ask the western world why did they fight World War One and two they will tell you all this wonderful stories,,,,

Ask them why there is war in Africa they will give you the simple asnwer,,,its tribal war.

Thats what I call western Hypocrisy.

Dont get me wrong am not calling you racist, but your analysis is based on western ideology.

dont just wake up one morning and decide to kill other tribes.

I ment to say people dont just wake up and decide to kill others. This is not just another random acts of violence.

If you look at all this so called "trouble spots"
in Africa, such as, Rwanda, Somalia and others, you will find that they share some common aspects
which one can urgue played a major role to bring about the present predicament in which these countries find themselves in.

In the precolonial societies most countries Africa did not have a central governing system,(what we now call the Modern State ) this structure was introduced to them by the colonial powers.

This alien structure came with a lot of difficulties and has became a curse on Africa.

Why ? Its not because it is too complex and that Africans are uneducated and cant understand how this system works,,, No.

This system was introduced to Africa by the colonial power who used it as a tool for economic exploitation and political repression.

When Africa became independent most countries continued to use this tool. because those who came to power saw that they could benefit and use this tool "state" to enhance their own interests.

They used the state to benefit their own people or ethnic group and at the same time repress those who were considered "outsiders" or enemies.

So it became a personal tool. Therefore, this process of economic exclusion and political repression led others, those who felt victims to call for justice and fair distribution of resources.

The answer is often too predictable. Their cry fell on deaf ears. The only respond they got from the government was more violence and exclusion from the State.

They victims of the state finally decided to responded using the only language that the State understood,,,they picked up ARMS.

They fight not because they are barbaric, its because thats a natural human tendency. To defend your yourself from injustice.

THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM OF SOMALIA
