Better yet, stop sleeping around and follow the proper islamic way to stay safe. I believe AIDS to be the punishment of god on earth. To punish those who are indecent and follow their animalistic instict of sex. Just they feel sexual need translates for them to look for it in the wrong way and in the process get punished for it.
Where I live, there are more than eighty somalian cases already. Their names are kept secret because of their request. They said even if their families know about it they will be cut from society. So they visit in secrecy to the doctor and suffer without support from their immediate families. It is very disturbing trend.

with your unforgiving attitude- blaming those ill with such an awful disease such as AIDS- how do you expect young somalis to get tested. You are right- they should refrain from pre-marital sex for protection- but what about a young person who has made a mistake- and who is now ill with AIDS- Should we punish them with our unkindness?
Where is your mercy. If AIDS is now in the Somali community- I am shocked to hear it is- Subhanallah! Then we need to educate the young and to allow them to seek the help they need. Having AIDS is a life sentence! We, as the Somali community, do not need to judge those that are afflicted. We need to help as much as we can.
It is not for us to say whether this illness is a curse or not. It is an illness and anyone who has it has needs our sympathy and not our judgemental tone. May Allah help them. |

The AIDS menace is new to us and that is why we are not willing as a community to take it very serious. However, if you are not aware of, in many islamic countries where AIDS is a major threat, Tests are encouraged for the new bride and groom.
I know Egyptians do before the wedding. Everyone of the partners must produce a certificate of clean record from AIDS. When and if (ilaahey hana koriyee) Aids reaches the percentage of constant fear among somalis, I think they will have to do the test, espacially those who live in western countries. They must.
Trust alone won't do anygood at all. After what somalis have gone through, all the culture shocks and irreligiousity, what makes them different than other people?. Nothing. They must be treated with the same caution other people would be treated period.
As long as we-somalis- reside in these western countries, we must accept risks and try to avoid them at any cost even if it is TAKING THE TESTS BEFORE THE WEDDING NIGHT. What a scary scenario.

As I indicated in the above message tests are neccessary these days. We can't continue in our somali pride of nothing is wrong with us anymore can we?. Because of the many young somalis who are
laggish in the faith or ignorant about it added to the misleading sex education in schools where condoms are available, I think it is right time that we demand tests for all girls and boys regardless of their reluctance. It is life and death situation not I am somali or muslim anymore.
There are situations that present themselves to somalis where if SATAN joins we could have a disaster and easy infection from people.
There are no good old somali men anymore,Have you talked to the somali taxi drivers lately?. They tell you that many female passengers don't carry fares with them and when they reach their destination they say either sex or leave me alone "because ain't get no money". So sister caraweelo, it is more dangerous out there than you think. I hope it will not be that much of something to ask to get tested nowadays. It is all for safety.

Aids is contracted not only through unprotected, multiple copulations, but through blood transfusion and intravenous drug use. In addition to usage of unsterlized hypodermics among many people in 3rd world country hospitals (e.g East Africa).
Do you know how the 80 people that you refer to above contracted the disease or are you assuming the all got it in one way?? |

Easy on me somali queen. Your name reminds me of my Granny Xayaabo may Allah have mercy on her. To answer your question of the infected somalis, I can not give you the details because it is kept confidential anyway at the request of the positive somalis. The doctors argued that families of the infected should know about the proplem so that they don't get infected by accident and if not, the sick must apply espacial housing to avoid risking their families. It is really bothersome for everybody to have infected person in the family and not know about it because of government guarantees and the privacy act deal.
Anyway, as you told there are many ways to get infected, but the most common being the sex part and we avoid with the help of god I think we are 98% sure to have avoided the risk. I am not judgemental at all and I take the same lessons you guys take at schools you know. Respect others, everybody can have his/her sexual preference or the blah..blah...blah garbage you know, but it seems you guys bought it big time. If something is wrong it is daaaaaamn wrong. |

Dear Somalis,
Somalis have a conservative attitudes towards sex and sexuality, but have a careless one towards diseases that springs from a non- responsible sexual behaviour. Do you know that Sexually Transmitted deseases are/were very common and rampant among Somalis prior to them seeking asylum in the West? The West is not a problem, it is the peopel's behaviour and actions! We should not punish our youth for mistakes they have made. We need to show them care and compassion, and offer them a place where they feeling that they belong. Isn't Islam all about compassion? Remember that "the most gracious, most merciful" are among Gods attributes. After all, thoses kids did not ask to come to the West. It was their parent's choice to collect welfare checks that subjected them to those influences. We also should bare in mind the absence of the "Somali father" in participating in the raising and the narturing of this childern, instead of spending time with his fellow Somali man, and chewing. Many communities that have been plaqued by wars, who haved seeked refuge in Western countries have done well for themselves and their people back home. But what have we done for ourselve, and our country???. We need to consider the seriousness of the AIDS issue, and its danger to our small population, instead to talking about "following God's way" If that was the case we would not have been here today, and there would have not been "HEAVEN AND HELL" and many cleriks would have lost their jobs. AIDS does not differenciat between rich or poor, muslim or none - the fact of the matter is that it is here to kill. So wake up folks.

My point was not to argue the problems associated with promiscuity- true pre marital sex and/or having multiple partners is both morally and socially corrupt! My point was to say that a disease like AIDS- is a terrible burden for any HUMAN to go through. Those that are ill or afflicted with this terrible disease- need our sympathy and help- whenever possible- not our judgemental frown.
Like Xaali mentioned, so eloquently, there are those who contracted this disease via other methods-
And my Creator is Merciful and Loving- and He wants us to be to be merciful to each other. When we say those that are ill are ill because somehow they deserve it- I cringe. Does the child who got AIDS through his mother's actions while in her womb, deserve AIDS? Does the faithful wife who contracted AIDS from her roaming husband deserve the pain of AIDS? Does the person who contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion, deserve AIDS?
I don't think so. Punishment for bad deeds is a reality. But at the day of judgement- when we are facing our Creator (SWT) and He is the only Judge worthy of judging. |

1) the baby in the mothers womb that can be saved from hiv with early treatment.
2) the innocent wife that contracted hive virus from har roaming husband.
and other unaware innocent people all need our full support. the hiv virus must be tackled, in practical and helpful ways. it could rarely happen to anyone.
shaming people and making them hide only makes the matter worse, mush worse.

ABOUT THE SOMALI VICTIMS I told you earlier and you questioned, this is all I can tell you.
There is an NGO organization in our area which is given by the United States Government some funds to accomodate those who are in need of spacial care and can't afford the expenses of medicine.
They came to our area with a list of the INFECTED SOMALIS mainly SOMALI WOMEN(I am not being prejudist here, I know there are many men who has it too) and wanted to help them out by providing money, support, seminars etc. Guess what was the answer to the NGO'S?. All somalis in unison said they will be discriminated and shunned if they even attend these seminars and start taking the drugs which are nothing anyway but soothing ailment. They were told that they can give their realtives the VIRUS through the KNIFE in the kitchen and many other ways but they were reluctant. The NGO'S didn't reveal the identities of these people for fear of suit in their mind or respecting the rules of privacy.
In conclusion, everything originates from a place and AIDS has its roots in sexual perversion and is common among gays and THERE ARE MANY MORE DEADLY DESEASES TO COME as told by the prophet when he said:
(If lewdness-sexual perversion-becomes common among people, there will appear deseases that were unknown to that society) or something close to this. I will find the Hadith in the science section of the islam.org pages inshallah. Whatever the key source is people need to be aware of the consequences of their actions, what they enbody. I am not being harsh to anyone but I believe AIDS to be the killer of many innocent lives as well as THE PUNISHMENT of transgressors for Allah is refengeful. What does fear ALLAH mean?. Becuase he can harm you if he wants to but his mercy overrides his anger and so forth. I conclude my topic to the following statement;
Usually people can trace their infection to specific source. When they are diagnosed, the first thing the doctor would want to find out is look for the source and there are many. The list starts with sexual partners and if that is ruled out after tests are conducted for both partners, then the next question is what happits the person has, does he use drugs, share needles in the proccess with people throughwhich he/she might be infected. If that is ruled out, the next question is doctor visitations particularly Dental visitation where some people contracted the Virus.
A family source is also possibility where accidentally one can transmit the desease unknowingly. The list of possible sources is too long to accomodate here. However, compared the percentages of possible sources of the virus, Sexual acts are the highest 95%. What does that tell us?. I leave the answer hanging for my safety in here. Because when I said sex is the first transport it seems I have invited to my self demonstrations. |

I agree with that but not the many part of the message. The most commonly diagnosed STD or the sexual transmitted deseases common among somalis were SYPHLUS(Isfiilito) or Gonrhya(Jabto).
Alomost a milloin somalis migrated to te USA and were tested for HIV and were proven negative including my self. I am sorry I don't agree and can't with your sentiments towards the west. I don't see the picture you gave which equates the STD in our country and the STD in the west.

Thanks for the little credit you gave me. Firstly, yes! there is a a strong relation between STD in Somalia and the ones in the West. And that relation is "SEXUAL ACTIVITY" regardless of its legitamacy, or what we consider legitamate, you forgot the simple fact that the same way a Somali contracted an STD is the same way to contract and transmit HIV. Regardless of where they live, East, West, Africa, or the Arctic for that matter. This virus just happened to be more sophisticated and new to us, which means the dangeour of catching HIV is eminent.
Secondly, it is good to instill in our kids and ourselves good morals, and to wait until apporpriate time. But that is not the case. The number is getting larger, which means that some of us are ACTIVE OUT THERE. And it is time to face this reality. So what can we do to quell and combat it???
Thirdly, you failed to remember that the Western School Systems were/are not designed and established for your kids. There is a DEFINE LINE OF SEPARATION BETWEEN THE STATE AND THE CHURCH. So the teaching of how to use a condom is part of the package the you have chosen, so you have to accept it or deal with it in one way or another. IT IS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SCHOOL TO TEACH YOUR KIDS ALLAH'S WAY AND HIS WILL. It is UTTERLY AND COMPLETELY the responsibility of the Somali parent especially the FATHER.
Forthly, most of the Somali refugees are economic refugees. By that I mean that the majority of them moved from the Persian Gulf and other countries to live in the comforts of welfare checks in the west. That will brings us the the point of, if those kids remained in their mother land or wherever they lived, may be THERE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE WEST THAT WE ALL BLAME FOR OUR FAILERS, AND SHORT COMINGS. Then we would have been able to see ourselves within our own content.
Last, you said that it is important to direct people to their God… Remember that Allah Said" Ina Allaha yahdi man yashaa, wa yadhilu man yashaa". Which means he bares responsibility for their souls and their directions.

I just had issue with your initial postings, which appeared to me as judgemental and somewhat accusatory....i.e assumption that one got aids through sexual encounters only .... then he/she must be promisicuis!!
In my opinion, one is more effective in educating people when the message is neither accusatory, nor alarmist, but rather sticks to the facts in a compasionate environment that empathizes with the situation of the people.
We all need to reach out to each other and share information, especially deadly ones such as AIDS.
I strongly agree with Anonymous, that it is the responsibility of the parents when it comes to sex education. Let them filter out the "garbage" the children are being fed......Speaking of garbage...no we didn't buy into everything we learned at school.

Xayaabo is the real name and it means "mist" in english although sometimes we call that "Ciiryaamo" ama "fog" in english too. She was too white for a somali and may be was given the name because of that. Actually she is my dad's granny anigana waxey ii tahay abuullan ama ayeeyo labaad.
Aids deserves an alarmist's attitude so to speak. If we don't educate youngesters who will educate them?. I hate when people use a compromising tone-No one in particular- and say " Use protection" instead of knocking it down and taking it off from the list of youthful experiments that we engage in. I am surprised that us somali people are dicussing such a subject without concidering the mainly poor victims of this disease who happent to be like many others problems of victimisation the women. Just because they happen to be at the recieving end of any problem brough to us by our so called percious men, since they unfortunately lack the education of save sex and are quite ignorant to a such disease. Asking your husband to get tested if you don't tust him is a good idea. And couples getting tested before they get married, is the way forward. also if your husband travels a lot or has more than one wife, and travels a lot, you should ask him to get tested. thes are all measures that will stop partners from being careless, and reduce the risky to the innocent partner. |

to dear brother or sister, I don't usually visit this site but I could not help to respond to this issue about (aids)which is terrible disease, and this minute I'm writing about it, is killing millions from around the world. So how do we avoid this disease not only comes from necessarily by sleeping with someone but could also come from blood transfusions, dental work if there is not equipment that has been sterilised, or contacting someone who has got the virus while there is blood present on their body, many ways it could happened. Somalis for many years have been protected by the place that they lived but have been vulnerable for the last ten years and so on. There are many deadly diseases such hepititis (c) same as aids very deadly. Hepititis (a) you could die from it if not cured the right way, it is easy to catch by even sharing a cup of water or tea or kissing on the lips, and the last one hepititis (b) they say there is a vaccine for it but also it could be deadly if untreated. Millions of blood donations go to Somalia and we have no idea if they have been tested from all those diseases, god help us. You hear every day about the southern side of africa how these deadly diseases are inflicted upon them because the system let the african people face this today and endanger them. What is coming from outside of the continent are not tested and inspected and could have any experiment same as they do to the chimps that are in the labs that have been introduced to aids just to see how long they suffer till they die. Remember they are native african animals purely innocent yet experimented with a deadly disease you bet what can they do if they have chance to do us, which they doing it to other parts of africa. Africa became the only continent in the world that never tested tourists. Somalia was the only country that has never granted visas to westerners and foreigners, there you go. Peace. |
