Sagal | Unrecorded Date If we really look at the history of Somali people specially the woman, it has been part of our culture to circumcize males and females. Males because God said it in the Quraan al kariim and females so that they remain virtually a 'Virgin' till she moves in with her husband. I personally do not agree with the concept that our foremothers held about retaining virginity, but why make it an issue now? I don't really get it. When a mother decides to mutilate her baby daughter, she means no harm but to keep the traditions that she is so well brought up in. When we came the western world and started playing the game of SEX as part of our lives then did we encounter the troubles and the time it consumed to pass through the doors that our mothers biult. If we look it from scientific point of view there is really nothing wrong with circumcition. So to me if a mother choices to mutilate her baby she has the atmost right to do so. Don't attack me girls, I know its hard fro u to accept my point of view but hey we should respect each other's view not attack personally. I put this issue on the table for somalis to discuss because it seems to pops up almost in every discussion that takes place between girls and guys. I wanted to see how many people would really agree with me and how many will disagree. So if u really gave ur opinions of the situation it would be great... N pls no attacking just exchange opinions. Thanks! |

Caraweelo | Unrecorded Date Sagal; As a somali woman I am truly amazed and disgusted, yes disgusted, by how you are trivializing such a horrific mutilation. How can you excuse it? Here is how childlike and ignorant your reasoning sounds: "Oh! We always did this. Why question what we always did. Since we always did it, it must be acceptable." How about when ancient arabs used to kill their baby girls? What if they used that logic. "hey we always did it. Why question? Lets carry on" What if they continued with slavery? "hey, our fathers and their fathers did it. Slavery was ok for them. So let us carry on and keep stealing humans!" female genetal mutilation is an issue that can not be dismissed so lightly |
Somali SIS | Unrecorded Date Carawello, Ditto. well said. Sagal- FCM is inhumane barbaric practice brought down to us (Somali females) by sick male chauvinistic society. Allah does not require it nor does he condone it. It’s sickening to see a woman who advocates it. Somali SIS |
Somali SIS | Unrecorded Date Correction: I intended to say FGM. |
Anonymous | Unrecorded Date Caraweelo well said sis. |
shaper | Unrecorded Date may be i am in wrong discussion but let me tell you fahmo everyone entitles his views and sagal got point there so even if you don't agree with her don't insult and don't take personal try to express your feeling in civilised way rather than insulting or getting upset. |
Sagal | Unrecorded Date I couldn't have said any better Sharper thanks bro. Girls I know it hurts to know that we have such a practise in our society. However sis Caraweelo, u can't compare death to circumcition coz these two issues r two totally different ones. Death n slavery r sin, but circumcition of a girl is not a sin, its just sunna u wanna do it ur choice. Let me ask u one thing sis, before u Came to the WESTERN WORLD, did u have objections against FGM? .. I doubt! why? becoz, u were brought up that way, then why make it an issue now. When all it does it turn daughters against moms. I won't by any chance promote things that would cause trouble between mothers n their daughters. There is no way u can stop this act... N thinking that like western women we have a voice that can turn against this practice, u r wrong sisters, we ain't western, but typical somali women. All I ever intended was to find out how many ppl disagree with me n their reasons, not have a personalized attacks on eavh other. Next time someone presents a topic to you guys, DON"T TAKE IT PERSONAL. Thnaks for your contributions.. n Special thanks to sharper. |
Wiz | Unrecorded Date Salaam Calaykum. Well, I am not an expert in the matter at hand (because I am not a women), but I couldn't resist saying something about it. Sagal: First, I do agree with you that this thing has been a cultural practice, and therefore is based on the context of the culture. It is not something that mothers alone are responsible for. In fact no single person is responsible for it.... not the woman who mutilitates the pure and innocent child, not the mother who consents to this act, the father who knows that their is no basis whatsoever in Islam, not the man who wouldnt take a women who is not "sealed", even though she is pure in spirit and character, not the sister who would laugh at her younger sister because she didn't undergo the process yet.... Then who is, you might wonder??? Every single one of us that belongs to that culture is responsible!! So, no need to point fingers... The damage has been done....Lets move on.... Secondly, I don't agree with you that it is Sunnah or has any Islamic significance. It is barbaric and I would agree with the analogies that my sister Caraweelo has used. Finally, I think there is something that we all can do. We can all abandon this graceless practice and save our daughters (daughters to be) from the pain that our sisters, mothers, grandmothers have endured. As I said before, this is a culture context based problem. Most of us are in foreign countries (especially western). You know that there is no one pressuring you to do this anymore. You have a chance to break the chain and cut the cord of this illness. We all do, and we all should. I know if Allah wishes for me to have a daughter, she will NOT undergo FGM. Peace and much love from a my tiny heart. Wiz. |
Cawil | Unrecorded Date Asalaamu Caleykum! I think I'm in the wrong place but I definetly agree with brother WIZ. Westerners are those who claim that this practice was inherited from the Muslims. I emphasize that, there is no basis whatsoever in Islam and it's Islamically forbiden that way we Somalis do it. I mean the method which we are known for. Waxaa banaan in gabadha dhiig kaliya laga keeno lana suneeyo but not to cut the whole thing. |
dr folish | Unrecorded Date i'm in the wrong place or what! no i'm not, coz the issue is serious and it concerns all of us. Yes it is a tradition to practice female mutilation but the question is how do somali women of younger generation-specialy those in thirty and less-see the problem. I think it's a human tragedy that concerns all of us. I have 20 sisters- coz my father married four women-and it,s hard to imagine the painful process that these women experienced during their childhood and in adult life.Would should women pay such a high price to stay virgin. After all this mutilation would not guarantie that the women remain virgin before mariage because women are human being and they may mistakingly go into a relationship before mariage and loose their virginity. Why should men pay attention to such a miserable thing. So why do we consider such an awful thing as a matter of pride! i think it belongs to women after all to take position. As far as i'm concerned if one day i would have to fight to save my daughter from going into such process of mutilation i'll do it without hesitation. Dr folish |
Anonymous | Unrecorded Date Dr. folish (i dont kow why call yourself foolish u seem quite a smart person), if every father stood firm against his daughter's or daughters' circumcition, this abominable act againt our females would have been long stopped. As I said once before, I will never forgive my parents for what they have done to me. |
Anonymous | Unrecorded Date to sagal would you agree if some culture murder people for traditional resons to do so. on the bases of tradition. think about it remember we are all hear as the uma of mohamed to promote good and ro condem evil |
Alex | Unrecorded Date Sorry to intrude to such a serious mater from not so serious man what I would like to know is. Does anyone have an idea of what do Somali women who have children outside Somalia especially in Europe and here in North America do to their young doughtier? Do they still practice circumcision? If not then the matter will dissolve with in next few year, because the next generation will follow this generation. It all depends on what is happening today. I’m in favor of non-circumcision. Thank you for reading. Salama. |
anonymous | Unrecorded Date This is very sad. Sorry but sagal you have to be very ignorant not to see the pain FGM causes to all ladies throughout the world. Not being able to urinate freely, having painfull periods every month, and even fainting occassionaly as a result.... just because of a stupid culture? As a woman, you should know better. For the rest of you, If you never experienced it, then read about it. Don't be an ignorant idiot and make an opinion on something you have no clue. God!! |

Anonymous | Unrecorded Date This is very interesting topic. I think the reason why is that they want their girls to be virgin until married. I mean if the girl is circumeted- she will have less felling so therefore will not have sexual feelings. Imagine if we were not ,we will be probably have so many teenage pregnancy but this way it prevents all kinds of bad things.so i dont think this a stupid culture. Look other nations who have no this kind culture-the white for example , there girls start having sex at the age of 12. while a somali is still playing with toys. |
peace | Unrecorded Date whoever wrote this earleir coment how old are you, really? The reason we have islam is to teach as the right things we do not need to mutiliat a girl to stop her from having sex its the holy book that tells us do not have sex before marriage. If the white girls are having sex at a young age and before they are married it is because they are not muslim. And any ways why should we have to cut up the girl or sew her together so as to stop her from wanting sex why do we not do something to the men so that they have no urges to have sex? From this you can see it was some manor men in our histry who wanted to sleep around but did not want his wife or his wife to be to do so and so he came up with this system. And to segal so what if it is our culture, culture changes all the time, and we should try to change it for the good not and not just follow the old one. peace |
