I would think that any love that developes over a conversation is an INTELLECTUAL love. ie, you agree or admire the person's intellect, ideas, and comments. But romantic love would only develop if the couple intended it to (they exchange names, personal likes and dislikes, marital status, appearance etc.). I have never met anyone who professes to love another (romantically) without having met them or seen their picture. |

Accoding to my definition Love is a disease even drugs can not ease the symptoms are dire they include desire.
So, going along with that definition I think you can not love someone you don't know in real live, in other words you can not fell in love somebody that you have met in Virtual reality.
But, you may like what you read from the screen, and that is quite different from the Word love whcih is very !Huge!.

Please bear with me, I am only trying to state my opinion to your initial question. It is indeed an intriguing one, however, the word " falling in Love" is misplaced or miss used because in my opinion getting "engaged or infatuated" seems more appropriate. I agree with Deeqa's first response in terms of internet being the vehicle for the person to exhibit his/her intellectual capabilities and that may be the first seed in stablishing our admiration and appreciation for that person. May be the person can engage our senses at intellectual level.Samale also has a great point. But to love is to accept the faults of someone as well as their strenght. To let yourself be in position to show your weakest moment, to let someone that was virtually stranger in the past be the king/queen of your life ,and to let person be the keeper of your secrects. Those things are huge part of oneself and hardly easy to entrust on someone you converse on the internet. Moreover,it is extremely hard to relinquish the rein of our lives. In my opinion, the person who we elect to take the reins should be worthy of it. And that is certainly not possible on this great medium because it is not the arena for anyone to show what they are made. However, it might give us the glimpse of what the prospective candidate might capable of . Given all of that, developing feelings toward "internet pal" hinges on our personal philosophy and how we romantisize the notion of love. If you are a person who is inclined to believe everybody in the world has another half made for him/her then you will readily perceive the above mention glimpse to be your lucky star!!!

First your thesis here was very well put. However for one to expect to have any meaningful relationship over the Internet is to put it simply "Dhalanteed" and dangerous at that. But I also beleive that for two people to pursue a relationship, the starting point should be that they should have some things in common, whether temperment, taste, intellectual or humour. That can be easily attained to some degree thru these cyber spaces before full bloom romance is sough.
On the otherhand, because of our cultural constraint, if I may come to your house say with your brother, I may be too shy or tongue tied to pursue you aggressively or may not be appropriate (yes it could be done other ways), while here I can be myself without being nasty, vulgur in other words being "in my element". So long as we excercise respect and maturity it's another form of getting connected except that today we utilizing a modern medium.

Second, please let me discuss the following:
1) I agree with you to pursue a meaningful relationship the two people must have something in common whatever that may be.However, we were merely contemplating the possiblity of inception of "falling in love". I disagree with choice of the word. It a strong word to use. Please let's be careful of using euphemisms when we are discussing the matters of heart because the ramifications are grave.
2)As long as we excercise respect and maturity this medium will be a vehicle to stay connected. However, It is a medium well suited for public debate and dialogue. In personal matters you need to stablish trust and privacy which are what is missing here. The shroud that cyber space provides renders this medium to be unsuiting for love.
As to you last comment I honesty believe that IF you are not earnest and truthful to yourself and to your loved one, all of our efforts are destine to fail. Part of being honest is putting "your guard down" because soon or later the person will find out "the real You". So establishing honesty from the get go will save both of you heart ache and lot of grieve!!! To me "love" means embracing the "whole person". My protocol is to establish "what you see is what you". To come to terms with the fact that we all lack something or another and are only human so strive together to road of perfection. And that takes acceptance and lot of hard work as well as lots of disappointments. If you do survive the turbulances then you made!!

This LOVE thing has been elusive, every culture or even between genders have different take on it's meaning. To the exterme some say, once your are infected, you walk around in a state of Zombie. Sleep no longer matters, food tastes like rubber, your eyes become glazed like a deer caught on head light, you start loosing count of who your realtives are .... need I go on LOL.
But as I said it's been elusive to me. I see my fellow westerns goggle eyeing each other when as they say, in love, but then you see statistcally their high divorce rate, while the arranged marriages (I don't condone it) lasts longer go figure!!!
I don't know if you read the book about Somalia written by Margaret Laurence called "The Prophet's Camel Bell" written in the early 50's. Here is an excerpt from her book regarding the meaning of LOVE among the Somalis at that period.
" Love between men & women did not here contain the dichotomy long ago imposed upon it in the western world by the church, that of separating it, as though it were oil and water, into elements labelled "spirirtual" and "physical". The Somalis recognized no such distinction. Furthermore, LOVE - like tribal war, was not only necessaity and a pleasure, but a skill and an art.

To those who claim that they drunk from its potent potion say that they have been transformed and transferred to higher level of conscientiousness. as for the book, the writer went on to become one of the greatest writers in Canada. She writes very elongley and very story like that you get caught up & gret transported to era of 1950's in Somalia. I understand being matematician & Statician, you work is cut out for you but if you get a chance read it, you wound be disappointed. Suheyla Novell use to have what is called Install base that is the number of Novell server installed worldwide. That has been broken at the beginning of this year. They no longer have that title. Basically I don’t want to see someone invest this much time and money then hear that we are looking for Microsoft people. Also Microsoft will come out with active directory sometime this year which is what the market is waiting for, if it becomes a good product, Novell is in a deep problem Plus Linux operating system is a big player now most of the ISP’s (Internet service providers are using Linux for their web servers. You might want to investigate of were the market is headed. Go to www.ZDNET.com and read some of their publications.
