Rwanda: Over 44 000 suspected of role in 1994 genocide Tue. May 29, 2007 03:57 pm.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) At least 44 000 Rwandans suspected of participating in the country's 1994 genocide are still in exile, Rwanda's traditional judiciary said in a report on Monday.
About 44 204 have taken refuge in Africa, Europe and the United States while 87 063 have died in exile, according to the report prepared by the courts charged with trying suspects in the massacre.
Around 800 000 people, accounting for one-tenth of the population, are suspected of participating in the 100-day killing spree that started in April 1994, the report said.
The United Nations estimates that around the same number of people, 800 000 mainly ethnic Tutsis, were killed by extremist members of the Hutu ethnic group in the slaughter.
Up to now, slightly more than 12 000 people have been tried for their suspected roles in the genocide, in conventional and traditional courts, known as "gacacas".
The gacacas were set up to help clear a heavy backlog of genocide-related cases from Rwanda's conventional courts.
Suspected masterminds of the massacre are being tried by a UN-backed International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda based in the northern Tanzanian town of Arusha.
The tribunal has so far convicted 28 suspects and acquitted five. - Sapa-AFP
