Africa: Malaria control still a challenge –Scientists Sun. February 25, 2007 05:39 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) A malaria network administrator observed in Tanzania’s city of Dar es Salaam on Wednesday that scientists and researchers consider malaria as the most challenging disease to prevent and control.
Prof Wen Kilama of the African Malaria Network Trust (AMANET), said scientists are still struggling to cope with the challenges in prevention and control of the number one killer disease.
The malaria network administrator was briefing journalists on the fifth biennial conference concerning malaria to be held in Zanzibar from February 26 to February 28 this year.
Prof Kilama said the challenges in prevention and control of malaria were complicated due to high rates in development of drugs and rampant poverty.
”This is why African scientists have decided to meet to discuss progress on research for malaria prevention and control,” he said.
” In addition to receiving and discussing scientific presentations, the conference will chart out proposals for future actions to contribute to the development of new and effective tools against malaria which has remained` Africa’s public health enemy number one,” he said..
“We are holding this conference in Zanzibar in order to review recent research advances in the fight against malaria and propose new frontiers for Africa to finally win this ever deadly disease,” he said.
Kilama said Zanzibar had been chosen as the venue because of its recent tangible success in the fight against malaria. - Guardian
