Eritrea: President Afwerki meets Swedish government delegation Sat. June 09, 2007 05:43 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) A Swedish government delegation headed by Mr. Frank Belfrage was on Saturday received by Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki who held talks with them, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
The Swedish and Eritrean sides agreed that Eritrea and Sweden should strengthen their coordination on issues of the region through reinforcing their relations.
The Eritrean president after briefing the delegation on Eritrea's stance on ways of resolving the Darfur issue, pointed out that as separate efforts are effective endeavors should be coordinated so as to promote a genuine solution to the issue, and as such the emphasis should be on promoting political solution.
Mr Afwerki while stressing that Eritrea's policy on the Somali issue focuses on reconstitution of the country, assured the delegation that it has been persistently pursuing and will continue pursuing such a policy.
The Eritrean leader further indicated that all efforts should be geared to this end, and that concerted action should be taken to enable all Somalis to seat around a common table towards establishing a national Somali government.
The President went on to underline that foreign interference undermines this objective.
President Isaias also expressed Eritrea's readiness to continue the dialogue that has been going on to develop relations with Sweden.
Sweden’s Frank Belfrage on his part expressed conviction that Eritrea is playing significant and constructive role in the region and indicated that he favors continued dialogue with Eritrea regarding regional issues.
Pointing out that Sweden lauds the Eritrean government's endeavors to upgrade the people's standard of living and promote national development, Mr. Frank Belfrage stated that his country wishes that the dialogue set in motion between Eritrea and the European Union for the development of bilateral relations and cooperation should continue.
Also yesterday, the Swedish delegation held discussion on similar issues with the Eritrean Foreign Minister, Mr. Osman Saleh. –Dehai-news
