Benin: Electoral commission delays poll results Fri. May 09, 2008 07:48 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) In what is seen as a test of Benin’s reform-minded president, Benin’s electoral commission on Thursday delayed the result of local elections in the West African state of Benin.
The results had been due to be announced on Tuesday.
"This postponement is mainly due to the failure to complete the counting procedures of the election," commission president Pascal Todjinou said. He gave no date for an announcement.
The small cotton-producing country, considered one of the most stable of Africa, voted for local councils last month in a poll declared by monitors to be fraud-free, though disruptions were reported at voting booths, some of which opened late or not at all.
The vote was seen as a test of President Boni Yayi's administration two years after he took office in a surprise victory in the country of 8,5 million people. His party was expected to lead the field. - Sapa-AFP
