Kenya: Swiss tourist fined $130 for calling police officers "black monkeys Fri. October 03, 2008 07:31 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) The Daily Metro newspaper reported on Friday that a Kenyan court fined a Swiss tourist 10 000 shillings (about $130) for calling two police officers "black monkeys."
After being convicted on Thursday for breaching public peace by using the comment in the coastal town of Kilifi in October last year, Valentine Buchli paid the fine.
"In future, this court will take serious action against such offenders," magistrate Peter Kiama warned.
The newspaper said Buchli had flagged down the two officers and started hurling abuse, including the "black monkeys" slur, without provocation.
Kenya has no specific law against racism. - Sapa-AFP
