Mohamed Abdi Farah

(SomaliNet) Heavy gun fire has erupted in southwest of Somalia capital Mogadishu between Islamic militiamen and militia loyal to Hussein Aideed, the interior minister of the transitional federal government before dawn on Sunday.

It is not yet clear the exact casualties on the latest clashes but some reports say at least 16 people mostly civilians have been wounded.

“The fighting happened in Hosh area of Dharkenley district at around 5:20 local time this morning with both rival sides exchanged all sorts of weapons,” eyewitness told Somalinet.

The militia of Islamic courts was confirmed to have taken control of the western police station locally known as (Saldhig Galbed) and area of Hosh village from militia of Hussien Aideed with the help of militia loyal Col. Abdi Hassan Awale ‘Qeybdid’

Despite the fighting has subsided it still continues in other parts of the capital particularly former government compounds near Daynile district of Mogadishu suburb.

There is increasing concern over the fighting might spread into other areas in the capital.

The latest battle is feared to turn into clan fighting between Ayr and Sa’ad sub-clans of Habar-gidir clan.

Sa’ad sub-clan sees the Islamic operations as an occupation by Ayr sub-clan.

Meanwhile, the transitional federal government condemned today’s fighting in the capital and appealed both rival sides to stop the battle and respect the recently ceasefire accord signed in Sudan in June 22.
