(SomaliNet) Hundreds of supporters of former ruler Bare Adam Shire Hirale have staged on Monday a big rally in Kismayo city against the Islamic Courts that took control of the port city in south of Somalia.
Reports say the protest came after the Islamic militiamen removed the Somali flag in the city and replaced it with a black flag written with the name of God and prophet Muhamad (PBUH).
The demonstrators gathered at the city square chanting anti Islamists slogans like ‘No to Islamic Courts, No to anti Bare people, No to Al-Qaeda operatives’. People were so tense and opposed the Islamic Courts.
The Islamic forces opened fire in the air to disperse the crowds and managed to control the city. Three people including teenager have been killed in the shooting by Islamic courts, witnesses say.
The protest was violent, with some of angry demonstrators burning tires and throwing stones to Islamic militants.
Meanwhile, the head of Islamic Courts in lower Juba region in southern Somalia Sheik Hassan Al-Turki who was leading the Islamist forces that seized the power of Kismayo city, addressed people in the city telling them the region would be under the Islamic law.
“This city is seized by Islamic forces including all tribes of Somali men and foreigners, welcome to the new peace brought to this city and I promise you will live in security and prosperity,” Sheikh Hassan Al-Turki said.
Sheik Al-Turki said the power of Islamic Courts would be extended to whole Somalia and prevent against any foreign troops with Jihad.
He has strongly condemned 4.5 formula (four clans and half system) in which the power was shared as illegal The council of Islamic Courts said it had occupied Kismayo to stop a foreign peacekeeping force using it as base.
The Islamic Courts captured the last southern port city of Kismayo from former Juba Valley Coalition forces but the standing question is why the Islamists extend their power through lower Shabelle region.
