Mauritania becomes more women friendly Fri. November 17, 2006 06:56 am. -

(SomaliNet) Mauritania's women are destined to enjoy more freedom after Mauritania's general elections. Mauritania's women will then occupy at least 20% of Mauritania's parliamentary seats. Mauritania's women will then be different from their counterparts in Muslim dominated countries.
Accordingly, Mauritania passed a law that orders its political parties to grant more leadership positions to women; otherwise, they risk rejection from Mauritania's government.
"This law was really necessary in a country in which women make up about three percent of elected officials and in which none are prefects or judges .The 20 percent was proposed as a result of political consultations with the junta, and, with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), we lobbied international partners to motivate authorities," said Jemia Mint Ichidou, a female lawyer in Maritania.
"The text calls for the presence of women in the second, fifth and seventh slots on the list of candidates running for municipal office and 'zebra' lists alternating male-female names for the legislative lists. For the senatorial elections, we are expecting women at the top of all the candidate lists, but nothing has been finalised yet," she added.
