Somalia: Many concurrent proxy wars in Somalia
Thu. November 23, 2006 10:33 am. -

Mr. Meles Zenawi
(SomaliNet) The Ethiopian Prime Minister declared war on the Islamic courts in a parliamentary session in Addis Ababa today. Mr. Meles Zenawi accused the courts of being a threat to his country and told the parliamentarians that his government is planning all out war with the enemy. Small skirmishes between Ethiopian troops in Somalia and the Islamic courts have been reported already.

Ethiopia along with Uganda and Kenya are supporting the weak Somalia government which is confined in Baidao city limits while Eritrea is allegedly arming the Islamic Courts who control most of southern Somalia.

Ethiopia and much smaller Eritrea have unresolved border issues after Eritrea’s independence from Ethiopia and have been fighting ever since. Both countries and many Middle Eastern countries have been implicated in Somalia’s arms-inflow by a UN report earlier this month. While Middle Eastern counties and Hezbollah were accused of arming the Islamic Courts, Eritrea on the Islamic Courts side , and Ethiopia and Uganda on the government side are said to have military and intelligent personnel inside Somalia.

If Ethiopia carries out its threat and wages a large scale war on the courts, Eritrea will not sit on the sidelines and the border dispute between these two countries will be settled on Somali soil and blood.

The United States joined the fray a little too late and is now advocating for lifting arms embargo on Somalia and helping the weak federal government. Many western analysts say Al-Qaeda has a foot-hold in Somalia. If true, Somalia is destined to become another fighting-ground for the US and Al-Qaeda. If Hezbollah and Iran involvements are proved to be true, then Israel may jump in too. All these proxy wars can be real while the Somalis are arguing about the legitimacy of the Islamic Courts and the federal government.
