(SomaliNet) Zimbabwe was set to receive a $2-billion loan from China; Zimbabwe’s government owned daily, The Herald, reported last week. However, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson has refuted allegations that negotiations to this effect are taking place.
The Herald said that Zimbabwe's ambassador to China, Christopher Mutsvangwa, had said that China was to send a representative to discuss the loan with Zimbabwe's Finance Minister, Herbert Murerwa and central bank governor.
"After seeing this news, we looked for confirmation with the relevant departments and there is no such deal," China’s Foreign spokesperson was quoted in the same paper (The Herald).
Zimbabwe is reeling under conditions of intense inflation and unemployment. It is also facing expulsion threats from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over unpaid debts.
Zimbabwe’s president, Robert Mugabe, recently welcomed aid with no strings attached. Zimbabwe is facing western isolation after a controversial land policy that saw white farmers lose their land in the country.
