Somalia: NUSOJ pleas TFG to allow Radio stations back on air Wed. June 06, 2007 11:36 am. -
PRESS STATEMENT
The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is concerned by the shutting down of three private radio stations in Mogadishu.
In an official order signed by the Minister of Information of the Transitional Federal Government Madobe Nunow Mohammed instructed the Governor of Banadir Region and the Mayor of Mogadishu city, Somali Police Chief and Director of National Security Agency to close down Radio Shabelle, Radio Voice of Holy Quran and Horn Afrik Radio.
The Minister reasoned out his order that the Radio Stations assorted to "creation of hostility, assistance to terrorism, violating the free system, confusing the public and government denial".
The three radio stations went off air immediately after receiving the Minister's letter. Modabone Nunow Mohammed referred letter from the office of Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Ghedi, dated 4 June 2007.
"We were distressed by the order of closing down the radio stations as an unanticipated act, and we demand immediate and sensible explanations from the Transitional Government on the closure of Radio Stations," said Omar Faruk Osman, Secretary General of NUSOJ.
"We are deeply concerned by this move as media community and the transitional government are jointly developing legal framework in a consultative and inclusive process to guarantee media freedom," added Omar Faruk. "We denounce the closure as it violates principles of press freedom".
NUSOJ asks the Transitional Government to handle this case in fair and transparent manner, and allow the Radio stations to resume operations freely and without fear.
NUSOJ defends principles and practices of press freedom and freedom of expression.
