Somalia: 10 Indians on ship hijacked near Mogadishu
Wed. May 21, 2008 05:19 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -

(SomaliNet) Following hijacking of a ship having 10 Indian crew members on board, the Indian Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre has been requested to alert their counterparts in Somalia and neighbouring countries to intervene and rescue the ship ‘MV Victoria’, on Monday.

According to reports, the ship, which last docked at Mumbai, was highjacked about 55 nautical miles of Mogadishu in Somalian waters on Saturday. This is the second time that the ship owned by Five Seas Company and operated by Marwan Shipping Company of the United Arab of Emirates (UAE) has faced a pirate attack.

The request alert was mentioned in an interim report that the directorate of shipping issued on Monday. The directorate has also communicated the information to the International Maritime Bureau Piracy Centres in Kuala Lumpur and London.

The ship ‘MV Victoria’ — owned by a firm from the United Arab Emirates and leased under the World Food Programme — was on its way with 4,200 tonnes of sugar donated by Denmark to the war-torn country of Somalia.

In 2007, the same ship was attacked by pirates in the same region but had managed to escape. A guard of the ship was killed in the fight. The ship currently has 10 Indians, two Pakistanis, two Burmese nationals, two Bangladeshis, three Kenyans and two Tanzanian nationals on board.

The managers of the ship have informed the directorate that all possible efforts are being carried out to rescue the ship and crew members. –Hindustan Times
