Somalia: Baidao on the brink of collapse Thu. December 21, 2006 07:19 am. - (SomaliNet) The Islamic Courts executed their long awaited assault on the federal government’s last stronghold and headquarters, Baidao. The fighting didn’t reach the city yet but it is flaring in nearby villages and small towns. The Islamic Courts met with fierce resistance so far but no one knows how long the interim government and their Ethiopian ally will hold their ground or if the tide will be reversed. According to insiders, the Islamic Courts fighters most of whom believe death is their ticket to paradise outnumber government side ten to one. Many of the Islamic fighters want to die while that’s not the case on the government side. This willingness to die for a cause alone can defeat strong armies like it did in Afganistan when the Mujahideen fighters drove out Soviet Red Army. Unconfirmed reports say the Islamic Courts are getting high-tech weaponry, trainers and even fighters from many Muslim countries and Eritrea. Insiders say courts' utmost goal at this time is to cutoff Ethiopian supply lines to the government. If the federal government loses this time and retreats from Baidao or the supply lines get overrun by the courts, the next front will likely be either Galkao in Puntland or the Ethiopian border.
