(SomaliNet) The defeated Islamic Courts Union officials announced on Thursday that they have abandoned Somalia capital, Mogadishu and completed their term in power in the interest of the Somali public.
The disappearing ICU leaders issued overnight a press statement expressing that they had resigned and let the people in the capital determine their future.
The top ICU leaders and some of their elite fighters have left the capital this morning heading to unknown location.
“We ICU leaders are right now leaving the capital and we have done this because of doing favor for the civilians and avoid fresh fighting in the
city,” said Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed the leader of executive council of Islamic Courts Union confessing that his Islamist group was defeated in the war.
Sheik Ahmed said the Islamists have done enough to the nation and now left a remembrance to the people. “History will mention our genuine activities in Somalia and we were an example that peace can be restored and lead the country into tidy way”
Unconfirmed reports say that the ICU hardliners and its fighters have gone to Ras-kamboni, a small island in southern Somalia, the Islamist’s former base.
If this is confirmed, it is not known whether they will fight back and start hit and run attack as they earlier vowed to do.
