Somalia: Somaliland question Thu. December 28, 2006 10:40 am. -
(SomaliNet) The federal government has been flexing its muscles in the past couple of days as the Ethiopian army turned the tide in Somalia and defeated the Islamic Courts within a few days. Now, the southern and central parts of the country are under the government’s control and semi-autonomous Puntland where President Abdulahi Yusuf once ruled has always been the government’s surrogate mother spending millions of dollars on it.
Somaliland is another issue. This self-declared independent but not recognized state wants to secede and stand alone.
The prime minister, Mr. Ali Gedi said all Somalia airspace and borders including national waters are closed. Any plane or ship that wants to use Somalia’s national territory must get permission from the national government. He was asked if Somaliland is exempt in an interview with BBC, Somali section and he replied with "Everyone knows Somalia borders and I am talking about all Somalia." If Mr. Gedi’s government enforces this condition, Ships and airplanes destined to Somaliland will have to either seek permission or ignore it and face consequences.
The Somaliland question is very thorny subject in Somalia and no one can predict what the future holds.
