Somalia: How the war is seen - same war different tunes Thu. December 28, 2006 10:16 pm. -
The world sees Somalia based on the information people receive from their local media.
(SomaliNet) The world except The USA and the Middle East receives more balanced news on Somalia and the picture of the war is in full color. America is fighting Al-Qaeda and its media is clearly with the interim government while many Arab media outlets backed the Islamic Courts.
Black and white
Most Americans don’t care or don’t know about world events. However, many news junkies think Al-Qaeda has been defeated in Somalia and the rule of law will prevail. The US government is also supportive of the interim government.
Somali government’s relations with the Arab League have been strained by the Islamic Courts’ close ties with the Middle East. Even Al-Jazeera TV other Arabian TV stations are reporting the war as if it were between good and evil, the latter being the government and its Ethiopian backers. Middle Eastern people who know about Somalia through such channels think the country is now under foreign occupation. Somalia belongs to the Arab league.
Somali People
The overwhelming feedback SomaliNet received so far tells a unique story. The majority of the feedbacks we received were pro-courts in the first days of the war. As soon as the government started winning, the mood changed into nationalism, sense of bride and the possibility of a long awaited national government. The public loves winners no matter which side.
