Somalia: Joint forces advance to Kismayo city, Islamist base

(SomaliNet) The Ethiopian backed interim government troops are advancing towards southern port city of Kismayo in Somalia, the last stronghold of Islamist rival, sources say on Saturday.

Witnesses say that heavily armed Ethiopian forces along with government troops have moved towards Jilib town in middle Juba region where the Islamic fighter dug in to fight against the allied forces.

People in Jilib town began to flee their homes for fear of being caught clashes in the town if the Islamists resist.

Ethiopian jet fighters were reported to have been flying over Kismayo, where the residents got terrorized and worried about air bombardment.

The Ethiopian are helping the interim government to control whole Somalia.

Islamist leader, Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed urged local people to resist fight the enemy.

“If the Somalis are ready to resist, we are ready for this and we have decided to fight the enemy,” Sheik Ahmed said. “God is great... God is great, we have been working for the security but now we have lost that because the country is occupied and the country needs independence,”

Sheik Ahmed and other senior Islamist officials are now in Kismayo vowing to launch hit and run attacks against the Ethiopian troops all over Somalia.
