(SomaliNet) Somalia police said on Thursday that its security forces at the main Mogadishu international airport arrested number of foreign suspects who were about to fly from the airport this morning.

A police officer at the airport said they have detained eight suspects who were thought to be belonging to ousted Islamists.

He said they were four Sudanese, three Indians and one Somali. All of them were taken out of the plane by the police.

Siad Ahmed Mohammed, the assistant director of Mogadishu airport, has told the local media the arrested foreigners were suspected of having links with the deposed Islamic Courts.

Mr. Mohammed said all the suspects are now going under investigation and will be questioned about their stay in Somalia and whether they had links with the Islamists.

It is for the first time that government troops arrested foreign suspects since it took control of the capital last week after ousting the Islamic Courts Union.

On Wednesday, the commercial flight companies in Somalia have officially started their daily flights after Somali premier Ali Mohammed Gedi announced on Tuesday that his government lifted the brief ban on the country’s land, air and sea borders.
