(SomaliNet) A US official in Kenya on Thursday was quoted saying that the suspect Al-Qaeda leader in east Africa was not killed in the Monday’s US air strike in the southern tip of Somalia.
The United States ambassador to Nairobi Michael Ranneberger told BBC that the key Al-Qaeda suspect is alive in Somalia contradicting early reports saying that Fazul Abdulahi Mohamed, the man wanted for the bombing of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 was killed.
Mr. Ranneberger also strongly denied reports that a number of civilians had died in the attack.
Earlier, Somalia interim government officials had said that Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, accused of masterminding the 1998 bomb attacks on US embassies in East Africa, was dead.
The US says it carried out the air strikes to target al-Qaeda suspects. There has been substantial criticism of the US after its first blatant military action in Somalia since 1994 shortly before 18 US soldiers killed in Mogadishu.
