Somalia: Govt. forces begin disarming the capital Sun. January 14, 2007 09:05 am. -

(SomaliNet) Government authorities in Somalia capital Mogadishu said on Sunday that its security forces backed by the Ethiopians had began house to house search operation in parts of the city collecting weapons from the civilians.
Abdirahman Dinari, the government confirmed Somalinet this morning that forces confiscated large number of weapons from villages in north of the capital.
“The security forces searched districts of Huriwa, Yaqshid and Karan, where they seized weapons including 19 small arms, like automatic guns, RPGs, bombs and explosives,” said Dinari.
The operation came following a week when unknown gunmen fired and threw hand grenades at an Ethiopian and government convoy passing by the road close to Arafat hospital.
In their arms search operation, the forces took guns from the Arafat hospital; one of the private hospitals in the capital, despite the government already said the government has no intension to collect weapons from business centers in Mogadishu if it is assured that the weapons are being held for security.
“They took all the weapons we would protect the hospital. Now we are vulnerable for thieves and anyone against us”, said Mohammed Hassan Ahmed, a security guard of the hospital.
Dinari said the forces also captured seven bandits who put up road blocks in north of the capital.
Public concern
Many residents in the Somalia capital, Mogadishu expressed their concern over the search operation by the allied forces and they fear that their personal properties will be confiscated if their houses are searched.
“I am very worry about the new powers given to the government soldiers that they can do whatever they want, we are afraid that they will ruin our business by taking our properties,” said Sedow Ali, a shopkeeper, a father of 5 children.
But some showed their support to the martial law imposed on the restive country arguing that it would be safe for the public lead the city out of the current insecurity crisis.
