Somali Militant Captured in Egypt

CAIRO. Late this evening, Egyptian police arrested Somali militant Islamist Dahir Aweys in a Cairo hotel after a tip off. The militant Islamist was in Cairo at the invitation of the Secretary of the Arab League.

Reports remain sketchy as the whereabouts of the Somali national. Some reports allege that he is being held at the Gamal Nassar Prison. While other reports state that he was bundled on to a unmarked plane at the airport bound for an unknown destination.

Efforts to get the National Police to confirm the arrest of the militant were unsuccessful. Police spokeperson, Omar Abdelaziz, declined to go on the record to verify the story.

The suspect, Dahir Aweys, is the militant leader of Union of Islamic Courts, a Somalia based Islamist group. He is on the UN terror list and it is unclear if Cairo will hand him off to Interpol.

Aweys would never go to Egypt or Kenya. Way to dangerous for him. He won't go to Saudi Arabia either. Not anymore. No trips to Mecca for him.
