The former spy made the request as he died in his father's arms in hospital, Valter Litvinenko told the Kommersant daily.
"He said Â’I want to be buried according to Muslim traditionÂ’," the father said.
"I said, Â’Well son, as you wishÂ…We already have one Muslim in our family - my daughter is married to a Muslim. The important thing is to believe in the Almighty. God is one.Â’"
Litvinenko, who became a British citizen before his death, died last Thursday in a London hospital, three weeks after he was poisoned with radioactive polonium 210.
From his deathbed, Litvinenko, a fierce critic of the Kremlin, accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of ordering his slow and agonizing death, which sparked a health scare in Britain and strained London's relations with Moscow.
The Kremlin denies involvement and has promised full cooperation with the British investigation. Other theories have centered on the possible involvement of rogue Russian agents.
On Monday, BritainÂ’s Interior minister John Reid said the probe into Litvinenko's poisoning will be expanded. "The police will follow wherever this investigation leads, inside or outside of Britain," he told Sky TV.
A police source told Reuters that nine British detectives may fly to Moscow on Monday to speak to witnesses who met Litvinenko in London shortly before his death.
Other detectives have already visited the United States as part of the probe, the unidentified source added.
Litvinenko served in the KGB's counter-intelligence department and then the Federal Security Service's (FSB), which succeeded the Soviet KGB to deal with internal threats.
He fled Russia and was granted asylum in Britain after accusing the FSB of plotting to kill exiled Russian businessman Boris Berezovsky.
Litvinenko also co-authored a book in 2002, titled "Blowing up Russia: Terror from Within", in which he accused FSB agents of coordinating bombings in Russia that killed more than 300 people in 1999.
Russian officials have accused Chechen rebels of carrying out the attacks.
