Somali Wedding Music: WTF with 1970s/80s English Songs

I just don't get it.

Why do Somali weddings somehow start to play music from the 1970s and 80s when the couple getting married were too young to listen to that stuff.

Just the other day I went to a wedding where they played R-Kelley's 12 Play songs such as "Bump N Grind", "Your Body" etc. That is some inappropiate songs to play so soon after the introductory Fataha.

I was thinking that a few months ago. Then I realised that it was similar to Somali music. Somali music is stuck in pre-war decades and the older generation back then used to go crazy for American music and films.

ItÂ’s priceless seeing old people dancing to James Brown and Michael Jackson I tell ya.

There is this old Somali guy who gets down and starts to do old skool dances from the Electric slide to the Twist.
