Lately in the L'Etoile du Nord state, I have been seeing many Somali teens who are driving taxis for living. I can swear some of these kids are not even 18 yet. What is going on here? What happened to going to school and getting education? And why drive taxi which is one of the most dangerous occupations in the world. Why not look for something else.

Many Somalis would justify driving cabs because of the personal freedom that comes with it. But what about the risk? No only do you have to worry about a mysterious individual with you, you also have to be anxious about the road itself; like getting involved in an accident since you are on the road 12 hours a day at least.

In addition, I have seen many of these kids pickup the bad habits of chewing graabo, since the real Miraa is too expensive for them, smoking, drinking too much coffee to stay awake all night and so on.
Walaahay we need a wakeup call on this. Someone needs to create a community service organization that would have a name like Preventing Young Somalis from Driving Cabs.
