Grant,

I've read a poll recently that said 39% of Republicans "probably or definitely" would not vote for a Mormon for a president. Among Avengelicans the poll is much higher.
I watched PBS program called The American Experience talking about Mormon tradition and religion. One practice i found strange was the baptizing of the world's dead! The Mormons not only baptize their dead ancestors but all those who died not knowing they could be members of the Mormon church. Mormon churches across the country baptize dead Jews, Christian and Muslims.....they collect names of the dead so they can be baptized!

Grant, can you please explain in layman's term what "Temple Recommend" means to a church member, and what happens to the rest of his family's salvation and afterlife if that member leaves the church?

Jr,

A temple recommend is your Bishop stating in writing that you have been a tithe-paying member of the Church in good standing for one year. It is required to get into a temple. Many Mormons don't have them, or don't have current ones.

One member of the Church is in no way blamed for the actions of another.

Mormons don't expect to be alone in the hereafter, mererly "advantaged" and united in their familial orders. The temple rites relate to callings, marriages, the sealing of children to their parents in the hereafter, and proxy "temple" marriages and baptisms for the dead, ensuring the unity of the family in the hereafter...... Mormons say that civil marriage is for time, ending in death; but temple marriage is for time and all eternity......

I have recently heard that Jews were offended by babtisms for the dead. As far as I was aware growing up this was only done for direct ancestors in familial lines, and only by members of that family. I am surprised the practice has been so generalized, but it is essentially just about the remission of sin and I don't know that it really has any sectarian consequence.
