Bernard Hopkins: This Fight is About RACE

Bernard Hopkins lit the fuse for tomorrow night's fight with Joe Calzaghe when he claimed it was a race war.

The outspoken Hopkins first controversially brought up colour when he told Calzaghe "I'll never lose to a white boy".

And he stirred up another race row at their head-to-head at the Planet Hollywood when he billed their clash as a battle between black and white.

The American made no apology for causing yet more controversy, claiming white people are just as obsessed by colour but won't admit it.

"It's always a race issue when it's black versus white whether it's boxing, tennis or basketball," he said.

"We dominate the sport. Africans, Hispanics, people of colour, we dominate this sport. That's why it's so important that when a white guy like Klitschko comes along they call him the Great White Hope.

"If colour is not important for white people, then why is it so important for them to have a Great White Hope?

"I don't take that as racist. I take that as white people wanting to represent themselves as a culture in the struggle of who's better than who. I welcome that challenge and I welcome the challenge of Joe Calzaghe.

"I say things other people won't say. Martin Luther King had that. Marcus Garvey had that. Gandhi had that.

Malcolm X had that. I have the courage to say what white people say is politically incorrect." Calzaghe didn't bite back at Hopkins' crass comments and feels it is just his unsubtle way of trying to unnerve him.

Undeterred, Hopkins, the bookies' outsider, tried again to tweak the Welsh Dragon's tail when he branded him a "conman".

The Muslim dismissed the super-middleweight king's perfect 44-0 record, claiming it was padded out with unknown Europeans and rubbish Americans.

"What impresses me about Joe Calzaghe is that he got away with the biggest con in boxing by fighting in Europe 99 per cent of the time," said the selfstyled Executioner, who ruled the middleweight division for 10 years.

"Name one fighter on Joe's record who comes half to matching what I've done in my career.

"He's the biggest conman in boxing, but I can't knock him because he has made a lot of money. It's a great con job."

Again the relaxed Calzaghe just smiled at Hopkins' attempt to psyche him out before they step into the ring at the Thomas and Mack Center to fight for the IBO light-heavyweight title.

Back came Hopkins, a pro for 20 years, and he widened his attack by accusing Calzaghe and his father and trainer Enzo of disrespecting him.

"Everybody in the US knows what I have accomplished so for Joe and Enzo to say what they've said shows they have lost it," said the Philadelphian.

"It's like saying Tiger Woods is not great or that Michael Jordan wasn't great."

Hopkins could always try boring Calzaghe to death and in a rambling interview, at times more like a self-improvement lecture, he droned on about how his four years and seven months in prison for robbery had shaped him.

"That's my crutch and nothing can break me," declared the clean-living Hopkins.

He now has a walking stick to go with that crutch after Enzo presented him with a cane as a joke because he's 43.

"Antonio Tarver gave me a rocking chair and now that I've got my cane, I've got everything," smiled Hopkins to show he does have a sense of humour.

Come tomorrow, though, he could be the one getting the caning
